Vikings place four on GNAC academic all-star team

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University placed four players, two for the second straight year, on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Football Academic all-star team announced today.

The Vikings named to the team are tight end Rick Carte (So., Juneau, AK/Juneau-Douglas), wide receiver Greg Dykstra (Sr., Everson/Lynden Christian), linebacker Brett Thompson (Jr., Auburn/Auburn-Riverside) and free safety Rob White (So., Woodinville/Inglemoor). It is the second straight year that Dykstra and Thompson have been GNAC academic all-stars and the third consecutive year that they have been league academic all-stars, being named to the Columbia Football Association team in 2000.

White is a biology major with a 3.71 grade point average (4.0 scale). Dykstra is an engineering major with a 3.64 GPA, Thompson an economics major with a 3.29 GPA and Carte a business administration major with a 3.21 GPA.

White ranks fifth nationally in forced fumbles (4) and leads the team in tackles with 93.

Dykstra has caught 54 passes for 764 yards and nine touchdowns. He also is averaging 13.6 yards on 11 punt returns, returning one 58 yards for a touchdown.

Thompson has been credited with 48 tackles, including a team-best 4.5 quarterback sacks; and Carte has five catches for 70 yards and one touchdown.

Western (6-3) hosts UC Davis (7-2) on Saturday (1 p.m.) at Civic Stadium.

SPOKANE - A total of 23 student-athletes have been named to the 2002 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic football all-conference team.
Heading up the academic team is wide receiver Jared Gibb (Jr., Ellensburg, WA) from Central Washington. Gibb is a junior economics major and has a 3.87 cumulative grade point average.
Central Washington placed the most players on the academic team with nine. Western Oregon earned seven spots on the team, while Western Washington and Humboldt State had four and three, respectively.
To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in their second year of competition at their university.
