BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Quarterback Josh Shimek (Jr., Pasco) passed for 158 yards and two touchdowns, completing 10-of-18 attempts, as Western Washington University held its final scrimmage of the fall training camp Thursday night.
Shimek, who is battling Steve Nichols (So., Stevenson) for starting signal-caller duties, threw back-to-back touchdown passes of 34 yards to Nick Yoney (R-Fr., Arlington) and 30 yards to Ryan Van Diest (Jr., Lynden). He also completed a 39-yard toss to Greg Dykstra (Sr., Everson/Lynden Christian).
Yoney had a scrimmage-high four receptions for 44 yards.
Nichols connected on 7-of-15 passes for 67 yards, one for a touchdown of 22 yards on a screen pass to Mike Westbrook (Sr., Lakes/Lakewood).
Two redshirt freshmen led the running game, Duncan Sherrard (R-Fr., Seattle/Roosevelt) having nine carries for 45 yards and Jake Carlyle (R-Fr., Olympia/Capital) three carries for 25 yards.
Michael Koenen (So., Ferndale) made two of three field goal attempts, connecting from 44 and 27 yards.
Western's defense allowed just one field goal on possessions that started beyond the 30-yard line. Linebacker Brett Thompson (Jr., Auburn/Auburn-Riverside) had a quarterback sack for minus-8 yards, one of four by the Vikings.
There was just one turnover, a fumble recovered by Jed Dern (Fr., Duvall/Cedarcrest).
Western, which was 8-3 last season and won the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship for its third straight conference title, opens the 2002 season at Central Oklahoma on Thursday (Sept. 5).
