SEATTLE, Wash. - Middle blocker Kristy Carstensen (So., Puyallup) and outside hitter Shannon Rowland (Sr., Bellingham/Meridian) each had 14 kills as nationally-ranked Western Washington University defeated Seattle Pacific University, 30-15, 30-18, 30-22, on Saturday in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both schools.
The Vikings, ranked No.10 in the most recent AVCA NCAA Division II Top 25 improved to 6-2 overall with the victory. The Falcons, who were led by Monica Herrera's nine kills, fell to 1-7.
Right-side hitter Niki Smith (Sr., Beaverton, OR/Aloha) added 11 kills for the Vikings. Carstensen had a match-high five blocks, and libero Nicola Parker (Jr., Auburn) had a match-high 22 digs.
Western visits Saint Martin's College in a GNAC contest on Friday (7 p.m.).
