Vikings control own destiny in GNAC title race

Oct. 27, 2003

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -

THIS WEEK: Western Washington University Vikings (2-6, 1-0) vs. Humboldt State University Lumberjacks (3-3, 0-1) at Redwood Bowl (Grass - 7,000 capacity) at Arcata, Calif., on Sat., Nov. 1, at 1 p.m., in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest.

The Vikings are off to a great start in the GNAC title race after last week's stunning come-from-behind 17-16 victory over defending champion Central Washington in their conference opener. It was the eighth annual Cascade Cup game and Western's annual Homecoming/Hall of Fame contest.

Western, which is looking for its fourth conference title in five years and sixth in the last nine campaigns, had a string of three league crowns snapped last season.

The Vikings are looking to snap a five-game road losing streak, all of them this season. The win over Central snapped a three-game overall losing streak for Western, which will not be able to extend its school-record string of 12 non-losing seasons.

Prior to its victory over the Wildcats, Western had suffered back-to-back lopsided road setbacks to two schools making the transition from NCAA II to NCAA I-AA, losing 48-19 at UC Davis on Oct. 18 and 48-17 at Northern Colorado on Oct. 11.

On Oct. 4, Western lost 29-20 to Central in the first "Battle in Seattle" at Seahawks Stadium before a crowd of 16,392, the largest to see a small college football game in the state of Washington.

The Vikings' first win of the season came on Sept. 27, a 42-35 overtime decision at home over NCAA Division I-AA independent Saint Mary's CA after trailing by 21 points in the first half.

That ended a four-game losing streak for Western which began last year and stopped a three-game losing string at Bellingham's Civic Stadium. Both streaks were the longest since the mid-80s.

The Vikings opened the season with three losses, two of them to teams ranked nationally in the American Football Coaches Association/NCAA II Top 25. They fell in their season and home opener on Sept. 4, 44-27 to No.8 St. Cloud State MN. That was followed by two road setbacks, 23-20 in overtime at Western Oregon on Sept. 13 and 52-28 at No.19 Nebraska-Omaha on Sept. 20 (tied 28-all at halftime).

Humboldt State lost 40-21 at Southern Oregon last week. The Lumberjacks have dropped two straight, both on the road, after winning three consecutive games for the first time since 1995. The victories were 20-6 at Saint Mary's on Sept. 13, and at home over Southern Oregon, 31-10, on Sept. 27 and NAIA No.9-ranked Azusa Pacific, 21-7, on Oct. 11.

The Lumberjacks' other two losses were in their conference opener on Oct. 18, 21-16 at Central Washington, and in their season and home opener on Sept. 13, 23-22 in overtime to Western Oregon.

Western finished 6-4 in 2002. Humboldt State was 1-10 last year, its seventh straight losing season, and 0-3 in GNAC play.

SERIES HISTORY: 10th meeting. Western leads series, 6-3. The Vikings have won the last six meetings, all by 19 or more points. Westen won 27-7 at Bellingham in 2002, 41-7 at Arcata, Calif., in 2001, 42-7 at Bellingham in 2000, 58-0 at Arcata in 1999, 36-17 at Bellingham in 1998, and 45-7 at Arcata in 1997. Prior to that, the schools had not met previously since 1962. The series began in 1956 with Humboldt State taking the first three meetings.

RADIO: KBAI (930 AM-Bellingham) is broadcasting all Western football games live this season with sports director Doug Lange handling the play-by-play duties for the eighth consecutive season. Providing the color commentary for the sixth straight year is former Viking quarterback Jason Stiles. The pre-game show, hosted by Mark Scholten, begins at 12:35 p.m. The KBAI broadcast can be picked up via the Internet at wwuvikings.com.

2002 RESULTS: Western finished 6-4 and placed second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings (2-1).

Humboldt State was 1-10 and was last in the GNAC standings at 0-3.

WESTERN REPORT: The Vikings' "new season" enters week two as Western chases the GNAC title. The Vikings are 2-6 and will finish with their first losing record since 1990, but last week's dramatic 17-16 victory over Central Washington in the Cascade Cup game puts them at the top of the GNAC standings at 1-0.

Defense played a major role in last week's victory. Western, which is allowing 439.8 yards a game, held Central to 294, including just 73 in the second half.

Part of the improvement came from a young secondary that had three freshmen on the field for much of the victory over the Wildcats. The veteran of the group is junior Rob White, who leads Western and the GNAC in tackles with 80 (ranks 10th nationally in solo tackles with 6.5 per game average, also paced team last year in tackles with 99). He also has a tackle and three passes broken up. Redshirt freshman Sly Whitfield has made four starts at cornerback, and true freshmen Bryan Jarrett and Justin Coronado have also made an impact, although both were injured in Saturday's game. Jarrett leads the Vikings in passes broken up with six. Coronado had an interception against UC Davis and had a team-high nine tackles against Central.

In contrast to the secondary, the linebackers are the most experienced unit on the team, with three seniors starting. Middle linebacker Lann Olson is second on the team in tackles with 69, including team-bests in tackles for loss (11) and sacks (3). Jesse Looker has 45 stops, with six for loss, and Brett Thompson has 42 stops and two fumble recoveries.

Leading the defensive line is sophomore end Joey Joshua, who has 39 tackles, including eight for loss, and has four passes defensed. Senior tackle Nick Ball has 27 stops, with 10 for loss. Six of Ball's tackles behind the line of scrimmage have come in the last two weeks.

On offense, the Vikings are averaging 388.0 yards a contest. Senior Josh Shimek and junior Steve Nichols have shared time at quarterback, although both left last week's game with injuries and redshirt freshman James Monrean was left to direct two drives in the fourth quarter, including the game winner. Nichols has thrown for 1,232 yards, with 11 touchdowns and four interceptions; Shimek has thrown for 903 yards with five scores and six interceptions.

The favorite target for Viking quarterbacks has been sophomore wide receiver Andy Olson, who has 53 receptions for 998 yards and eight touchdowns. (For more on Olson, see "Olson Catching On'' below.) Senior slotback Nate Kuhns has 24 catches for 202 yards and one score despite missing three games, and six other players have at least 10 receptions.

Leading the running attack is sophomore Duncan Sherrard, who has rushed for 572 yards and three scores on 132 carries. Sherrard has run for 191 yards over the last two games, and scored the crucial touchdown with 46 seconds left against Central. He runs behind an offensive line led by senior guard Jon Pagan and sophomore center Loren Winter.

Junior Michael Koenen, a consensus NCAA II All-America punter last year, handles all kicking duties for Western. Koenen is averaging 43.7 yards a punt (ranks third nationally), with nine of his 36 attempts traveling 50 yards or more. He has sent 15 kickoffs for touchbacks, and last week recovered his own onside kick. Koenen is 20-of-21 on extra points, and while he is just 8-of-18 on field goals (1.0 makes per game ranks 25th nationally), half of his attempts have come from 45 yards or more, and he has connected on field goals of 51 and 50 yards in the last two games.

Western, which at one point this season was a minus-17 in turnover-takeaway ratio, is plus-3 (5-to-2) in its last two contests.

OLSON CATCHING ON: Sophomore Andy Olson is putting together an outstanding season. Olson leads Western with 53 receptions for 998 yards and eight touchdowns, as well as being the team leader in average yards per catch (18.8). He tied a school record by making touchdown catches in seven consecutive games, a streak that began in last year's season-ending contest against UC Davis, and last week his 52-yard reception in the last two minutes was the big play in the game-winning drive to defeat Central. He ranks third nationally and leads the GNAC in reception yardage (124.8 avg.).

In one three-game span this season, Olson had 27 receptions for 546 yards and four touchdowns, and posted three of the top 15 receiving yardage performances in school history - having seven catches for 182 yards and two touchdowns at Nebraska-Omaha, making 11 grabs for 199 yards and a score against Saint Mary's, and nabbing nine receptions for 160 yards and a touchdown against Central Washington.

This season, Olson has twice garnered GNAC Offensive Player of the Week and honorable mention D2Football.com Player of the Week accolades.

Olson, whose older brother Lann, is the starting middle linebacker, has also been a threat on punt returns, averaging 11.8 yards on 12 attempts.

HUMBOLDT STATE REPORT: Humboldt State is 3-3 and striving for its first winning season since 1996 despite road losses the last two weeks. The resurgence has been led by an offensive air show that has averaged 306.3 yards passing a game and 406.2 yards of total offense.

Senior quarterback Chris Dixon has been the trigger of the Lumberjack attack, throwing for 1,294 yards and eight touchdowns through the first five games, completing a school-record 41 passes (48 att.) in a victory over Southern Oregon that earned him NCAA Division II Player of the Week honors.

Dixon (high ankle sprain) missed last week's rematch at Southern Oregon with an injury, but Jason Baughman stepped in to complete 40-of-64 passes for a school-record 468 yards. The mark he broke was 455 yards by Dixon last season against NCAA I-AA Sacramento State.

Whoever takes the snaps has a trio of outstanding wide receivers to throw to. Junior Dustin Creager has been an all-GNAC pick the last two seasons, already racking up 178 career receptions for 2,036 yards. This year, Creager has 41catches for 577 yards and five touchdowns.

Senior Chris White is the Lumberjack leader in receptions this season, having 43 grabs for 497 yards and one touchdown, and senior Brent Adkins, the son of head coach Doug Adkins, has 35 receptions for 372 yards and three touchdowns. White, who leads the GNAC in receptions per game (7.2) had 11 catches and Adkins made 10 in last week's loss.

Leading the rushing game is junior Adrian Waddy, who has 326 yards and six touchdowns on 81 carries.

Senior linebacker Tim White, a second-team all-GNAC pick last year when he had 99 tackles, leads the defense with 56 this season, including six for loss. Senior safety Mohammed Muheize has 55 stops and a team-best seven passes defensed, and senior cornerback Duval Seamster leads the GNAC with five interceptions.

On special teams, Muheize is averaging 11.9 yards a punt return, and Cody Killingsworth has averaged 30.6 yards on five kickoff returns.

NOTES: Michael Koenen ranks No.7 among the Vikings' career scoring leaders with 187 points (one short of No.6), converting 97-of-102 PATs and 30-of-55 field goals. He is third nationally in punting, averaging 43.7 yards ... Western has played three true freshmen this season, cornerback Bryan Jarrett, free safety Justin Coronado and long snapper Joel Jorgensen. They are the first true freshmen to see action for Western since Nate Kuhns did so in 2000 ... Western had six turnovers against Western Oregon. The last time the Vikings did that was Nov. 8, 1997 in a 36-22 loss at Central ... Western has had eight overtime games in its history, including two each in 1997, 2002 and this season.

TURNOVER/TAKEAWAY: Western, which was a plus 107 in turnover/takeaway ratio (207 to 314) over the previous12 seasons, is minus-14 this year (23 to 9). The last time the Vikings finished with a negative total was in 1991.

INJURY REPORT: Starting quarterback Josh Shimek (shoulder, non-throwing arm) and backup signal-caller Steve Nichols (shoulder, throwing arm) sustained injuries in the Central game, but both are expected to play this week. Cornerback Bryan Jarrett tore the MCL in his right knee and is out for the season. Free safety Justin Coronado, who hurt his back on the first play of the fourth quarter and was removed by ambulance for precautionary reasons, was released later that evening and is expected to play this week. Long snapper and backup offensive lineman Jeff DeBuigne is questionable with a knee sprain as is backup nose guard Andy Thompson (knee). Wide receiver Kevin Cooley is out for the season after suffering a separated shoulder in the UC Davis game.

WESTERN NATIONAL STATS RANKINGS: Western wide receiver Andy Olson is ranked nationally in four categories, including No.3 in receiving yards, and the Vikings are 15th in team passing offense in this week's NCAA Division II football statistical report. Olson is averaging 124.8 receiving yards per game. He is 13th in receptions (6.6), 27th in all-purpose yards (142.4), and 34th in punt returns (11.8). Western is averaging 288.8 yards through the air. Strong safety Rob White is 10th in solo tackles (6.5), and Michael Koenen is third in punting (43.7) and 25th in field goals per game (1.0).

TOUGH SCHEDULE: Smith calls Western's 2003 schedule "the most challenging" in school history. The Vikings play three NCAA I-AA schools, two of which, UC Davis and Northern Colorado, are beginning their first year of provisional status after being longtime NCAA II powers. There are two games against teams from the rugged North Central Conference, St. Cloud State and Nebraska-Omaha. As well, the Vikings have two regular-season matchups with archrival Central Washington, which was 11-1 last year.

KOENEN NAMED TO FOUR PRESEASON A-A TEAMS: Junior Michael Koenen was named to four preseason All-America teams as a punter, being honored by Street & Smith, Don Hansen's Football Gazette, Lindy's Football Annuals and D2Football.com. He was a first-team Daktronics, D2Football.com and Football Gazette All-American last fall, and second-team Associated Press Little All-America. Koenen led DII in punting with school-record 44.9 average. He also holds school marks for longest punt (73 yards), longest field goal (54 yards), consecutive field goals (8), and consecutive PAT conversions (40).

MILESTONES: Rob Smith needs three wins to become the first coach in Western history to reach 100. Only two four-year collegiate coaches have reached that figure while coaching in the state of Washington, those being Frosty Westering at Pacific Lutheran (253) and Don James at Washington (153). Smith currently ranks fourth, with Washington's Jim Owens third with 99.

COACHES: Rob Smith (Washington, 1981) is in his 15th year as head coach and his victory total (97-52-1) and winning percentage of 65.0 are the best in Western history. Smith has directed the Vikings to their only five national playoff berths in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1999, and guided them to their best regular-season (No.1, 1995) and final (No.1, 1995) national rankings. He was named GNAC Coach of the Year in 2001, Columbia Football Association Coach of the Year in 1989, 1995, 1996, 1999 and 2000, and American Football Coaches Association College Division Region V Coach of the Year in 1995 and 1996.

Doug Adkins (Central Washington, 1970) is in his fourth year (12-28) as head coach at Humboldt State. He was previously the defensive line coach at Nevada for five years. Adkins also served as defensive coordinator at Humboldt State for five seasons, Oregon Tech for one and Central Washington for six years.

NEXT WEEK: Western has a bye week before ending its 2003 season on Sat., Nov. 15, (1 p.m.) playing host to Western Oregon at Bellingham's Civic Stadium.

LAST WEEK AGAINST CENTRAL WASHINGTON: Running back Duncan Sherrard scored on a fourth-and-goal play from the 1-yard line with 43 seconds left and Michael Koenen kicked the decisive extra-point, lifting Western to a stunning 17-16 victory over Central Washington, in the eighth annual Cascade Cup football game before a crowd of 2,889 at Bellingham's Civic Stadium.

The contest was the Vikings' Homecoming/Hall of Fame Game and their GNAC opener.

Central, which defeated Western, 29-20, in the Battle in Seattle on Oct. 4, fell to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the GNAC.

Third-string quarterback James Monrean directed the game-winning drive after starter Josh Shimek and backup Steve Nichols both were forced out of the game with shoulder injuries.

The Vikings started the game-winning drive at their 27-yard line with 2:36 to play. Monrean opened the series by scrambling for 14 yards, then on the following play, hit wide receiver Andy Olson on a slant pattern, and Olson made a one-handed grab and sprinted down the right sideline for a 52-yard gain to the Central seven. Three plays put the ball on the one, setting up Sherrard's scoring run up the middle.

Central, which was out of time outs, returned the ensuing kickoff to the Wildcat 15, but on second-and-10, quarterback Zak Hill, who had thrown for one touchdown and run for another, was intercepted by Western free safety Shane Keck with 21 seconds left.

The Vikings entered the fourth quarter trailing 16-7, but narrowed the margin to 16-10 on a 50-yard field goal by Koenen with 9:30 left. Nichols was injured on the previous play, but still came on to hold for both the field goal and the winning extra-point, and the long snapper for each kick was true freshman Joel Jorgensen, who was seeing his first collegiate action after regular snapper Jeff DeBuigne was injured earlier in the game.

Western had a 319-294 edge in total offense. The Vikings, who entered the contest allowing 460.6 yards a game, held Central to 73 yards of offense and three first downs in the second half.

The Wildcats opened the scoring with 4:22 left in the first quarter as Hill, who completed 12-of-27 passes for 140 yards, found wide receiver Jake Roberts for a 9-yard scoring pass to cap a 10-play, 89-yard drive. They extended the lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter as Hill scrambled in from four yards out.

But the Vikings came back to score midway through the quarter, as a 46-yard run by Sherrard put Western on the Wildcat 21, and Shimek eventually scored on a 1-yard run.

Central extended its lead to 16-7 with five minutes left in the third quarter. Nichols fumbled in the Western end zone, and although Viking tight end Rick Carte recovered the ball, he was unable to get out, giving the Wildcats a safety.

Shimek was 12-of-23 for 112 yards before leaving midway through the third period. Sherrard rushed for 93 yards on 17 carries. For Central, Emilio Iniguez ran for a game-high 112 yards on 20 carries.

Sherrard and linebacker Lann Olson received respective GNAC offensive and defensive Player of the Week honors for their performances.

LAST MEETING WITH HUMBOLDT STATE: Quarterback Steve Nichols, making his first career start, threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for a score, leading Western to a 27-7 victory over Humboldt State in a GNAC contest at Bellingham's Civic Stadium on Oct. 26, 2002.

After a scoreless first quarter, Western opened the scoring with a 30-yard field goal by Michael Koenen, then took a 10-0 lead on a 13-yard pass from Nichols to Dykstra with 2:18 left in the half.

The Lumberjacks responded by going 80 yards in less than two minutes, capped by a 3-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Currell to Brett Adkins.

Currell completed 18-of-21 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game after taking a hard hit midway through the third quarter. Adkins had 10 receptions for 73 yards. The Lumberjacks had just two first downs and 43 yards of offense after Currell's departure.

Western took control of the contest in the third quarter. On the second play of the half, slotback Mike Westbrook turned a short pass over the middle into a 65-yard gain, setting up a 1-yard scoring run by Nichols on the following play. On the next Western possession, Koenen kicked a 36-yard field goal that gave the Vikings a 20-7 lead.

Western closed the scoring with a 4-yard pass from Nichols to tight end Adam Snel with 3:27 left in the contest.

The Vikings had a 521-243 edge in total offense as Western quarterbacks combined to go 26-of-37 for 385 yards, as Nichols was 18-of-28, and Josh Shimek, the starter in the first six games, was 8-of-9 for 75 yards.

The scoreless first quarter was the first the Vikings had been involved in since 1999.

Nichols earned GNAC Offensive Player of the Week honors for his performance.

HEAD COACH Rob Smith ON ...:

... COME-FROM-BEHIND VICTORY OVER CENTRAL

"It was a very big win for us, and I don't think that's overstating it at all. Maybe one of the biggest wins that I've been involved with because of how our season has gone and that it puts us into a position of playing the last two games for a conference championship. That would be a great way to send out our seniors."

"It was as crazy a game as I've been involved in - maybe ever. We go to kick a field goal one time, and we've got everybody out there except our holder. I look around for him, and there's Steve (Nichols) standing next to me with his arm hanging down to the ground. We call a timeout and try to figure out what to do now because Josh (Shimek) our backup holder had gone out earlier, and Steve said, 'I think I can do it if the snap's not high,' and we have a backup snapper out there who had never played in a college game before. So the game had everything, no question about it. And it was so sweet to see our players respond. They make the game 60 minutes for a reason. We did not have a lead until after 59 minutes and 17 seconds had been played."

... BRINGING HOME THE CASCADE CUP

"The cup is something that both schools take pride in having, and we'll proudly display it for the next year. This is the one game we have where the outcome of the game is put on display for one year."

... RELIEF OF GETTING WIN

"I don't know if any team needed a win more than our team did Saturday, and to have it come against our arch-rival in the Cascade Cup game on Homecoming weekend was very big for us."

"I've coached a long time, and been on both sides of a game like this. But with all that this team has been through, both in this game and this season, this was really special."

... HUMBOLDT STATE

"They've had some big wins and some close losses. They won at Saint Mary's earlier in the year, lost at home to Western Oregon in a game that they completely controlled, and took Central right down to the wire two weeks ago. They're a much-improved football team coming off a difficult defeat. They too have dealt with injuries, losing their starting quarterback for a couple of weeks and we're not certain of his status for our game, and they have an outstanding corps of receivers."

"We're going to have to deal with a long trip, and coming off an emotional high of the win over Central. We've got to make sure that we get our feet back on the ground and get re-focused because we know Humboldt State will be ready to play. They would love nothing more than to beat Western."

... CONFERENCE RACE

"It (win over Central) puts us in position to control our own fate with two big games for us. I've always said that the conference championship is our first goal. It's the one thing you can win on the field, and we beat the team that had the championship last year and we felt took it from us, so now we have a chance to win what would be our fourth title in five years."

... SNAPPING FIVE-GAME ROAD LOSING STREAK

"We are used to wearing our white jerseys (this season). We have not fared well on the road and we would certainly like to change that."
