Vikings add four assistant coaches

April 18, 2003

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Stacy Collins, who was the defensive coordinator at South Dakota Tech last season, heads a group of four assistant coaches added to the Western Washington University football staff.

Also joining the Vikings are graduate assistants Raven Battle, who coached the tight ends the last two years at NCAA Division I-AA Idaho State, and Zach Tinker, a former Viking who has coached the past four years at Meridian High School; and student assistant Jared Terrible, who coached the last two seasons at Sehome High School.

They fill holes left by Jay Dumas, a graduate assistant who went to Montana State in March; and Torey Hunter, who was recently hired by Idaho State.

Collins, who will work with the linebackers, was an assistant at Western Oregon from 1998 to 2001. For three springs, he coached with the Vikings of Vienna, Austria, a member of the European Federation of American Football, helping them to three league titles and one Europe Bowl appearance.

The 27-year-old Collins received his bachelor's degree from Western Oregon in 1998 and master's degree in 2000. He was a four-year letterman for the Wolves, earning Columbia Football Association all-star honorable mention as a senior.

Battle, who will work with the linebackers and safeties, was an assistant at Idaho State the last two seasons. A standout linebacker for the Bengals from 1995 to 1998, he led the team in tackles as a senior.

The 25-year-old Battle, who attended Miami-Killian High School in Miami, Fl., received his bachelor's degree from Idaho State in 2001.

Tinker, who will work with the tight ends, coached the defensive and offensive line at Meridian High School the last four years, the Trojans winning the Class 2A state championship in 1999 and placing second in 2000. He played at Western from 1995 to 1998, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1998.

Terrible, who will be a senior at Western next fall and earned his associate degree at Olympic CC in 2001, coached the last two seasons at Sehome High School, helping with the offensive line and defensive tackles. The Mariners finished 7-2 in 2002.

The 22-year-old Terrible, who will work with the Vikings' defensive line, also coached one year Central Kitsap High School in Silverdale, Wash. A 1998 Central Kitsap graduate, Terrible helped the Cougars to their first league football title in 17 years as a senior.
