BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University quarterback James Monrean has been named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for Oct. 3-9.
Monrean, a sophomore from Bellingham (Sehome High graduate), made his first collegiate start last Saturday, and tied school and GNAC records by throwing five touchdown passes in the Vikings' 42-13 non-conference victory over Saint Joseph's (Ind.).
Monrean completed 12 of 24 passes for 190 yards with no interceptions, and also added 20 yards rushing on six carries. His touchdown passes were 23 and 11 yards to Chris Robinson, 38 yards to Andy Olson after Western recovered a fumble with two seconds left in the first half, 4 yards to Nick Yoney and 18 yards to Duncan Sherrard.
Western (4-2, 1-1) returns to GNAC play Saturday (1 p.m.), entertaining Humboldt State University (3-3, 1-1) in the Vikings' annual Homecoming/Hall of Fame game.
