BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Two Western Washington University football players, wide receiver Andy Olson and punter/placekicker Michael Koenen, received Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors for their performances in the Vikings' 49-0 win over Western Oregon. Olson got the offensive award and Koenen garnered the special teams accolade.
Olson, a junior from Chehalis (W.F. West High graduate), caught six passes for 89 yards, including touchdown receptions of 16 and 24 yards. He leads the league in touchdown catches, tying the school record with a touchdown reception in seven straight games. That is one short of the GNAC record.
Koenen, a senior from Ferndale (Ferndale High graduate), averaged 54.2 yards on four punts, including a long of 61. He also had three touchbacks on kickoffs and connected on all seven of his extra point attempts, increasing his career point total to 254, 13 short of the school and Northwest small-college records.
Western (5-3, 2-2) travels to Ellensburg on Saturday for an important GNAC game against archrival Central Washington University (5-4, 3-1). It is also the ninth annual Cascade Cup contest with both schools having four wins in the trophy series that began in 1996.
