Vikings end season at Humboldt State

Nov. 2, 2004

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -

UPCOMING GAME: Western Washington University Vikings (5-4) vs. Humboldt State University Lumberjacks (5-4) in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest Saturday (1 p.m.) at the Redwood Bowl (Grass - 7,000 capacity) in Arcata, Calif.

The Vikings are looking to clinch their fifth winning record in six years and avert their first consecutive non-winning seasons since 1998. They are third (2-3) in the league standings, and Humboldt State, which is seeking to clinch its first winning campaign since 1995, is second (3-2). Central Washington (4-1), which travels to fourth-place Western Oregon (1-4), already has clinched a share of the GNAC title.

Last week, Western was unable to hold a 14-point third quarter lead and lost 31-17 at Central in the ninth annual Cascade Cup game. That loss ended any chance of the Vikings defending their league championship. Western had played its previous three games at home, ending that stretch on Oct. 23 with its first shutout victory since 2001, 49-0 over Western Oregon. That snapped a two-game league losing streak, the Vikings' longest since 1998.

The week before, Western had a six-game home winning streak snapped, losing 34-27 to Humboldt State. The Vikings opened their home stand on Oct. 9 with a 42-13 non-league win over Saint Joseph's IN.

Prior to that, Western split a pair of conference road games, losing 52-49 in four overtimes at Western Oregon, the longest game in Northwest small college history, on Oct. 2, after rallying from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat archrival Central, 28-21, on Sept. 25 before 11,458 fans in the second annual Battle in Seattle at Qwest Field.

Western played a near flawless first half in upsetting No.23 Nebraska-Omaha, 31-21, at Bellingham on Sept. 18. The Vikings opened their season with a 27-25 win over Fort Lewis CO at Civic Stadium, then fell, 44-29, at No.25 St. Cloud State MN.

The triumph over Fort Lewis was the 100th collegiate victory for Western head coach Rob Smith, the winningest coach in school history with a career mark of 104-56-1 in 16 seasons. Smith became just the third coach to reach the century mark in wins while coaching collegiately in the state of Washington. The other two are Frosty Westering (261, Pacific Lutheran) and Don James (153, Washington), both retired.

Humboldt State, which has not had consecutive victories or losses this season, is coming off a 39-33 victory at Western Oregon last Saturday.

It was the Lumberjacks' second straight win away from home. They had snapped an eight-game road losing streak with a 34-27 win over Western at Bellingham on Oct. 16. In between those two contests, Humboldt State fell 13-3 at home to Central on Oct. 23.

The Lumberjacks split their first two GNAC contests, defeating Western Oregon, 34-7, at home on Sept 25, and losing 45-0 at Central on Oct. 2.

Prior to that, the Lumberjacks halved four non-league games. Their two wins came at home over Menlo College, 42-14, on Aug. 28 and Southern Oregon, 32-0, on Sept. 11; and their two losses were on the road, 42-7 to NCAA I-AA Cal Poly and 17-10 to Azusa Pacific CA.

Western finished 4-6 last year, winning their last three games, all league counters, to take the GNAC championship with a perfect 3-0 record. It was the Vikings' fourth league title in five years and sixth crown in nine seasons.

Humboldt State was 3-7 last year and fourth in the GNAC at 0-3.

SERIES HISTORY: 12th meeting. Western leads the series, 7-4. The Vikings had a seven-game series winning streak snapped on Oct. 16, Humboldt State winning 34-27 at Bellingham. Western had won the previous seven meetings, 34-20 at Arcata in 2003, 27-7 at Bellingham in 2002, 41-7 at Arcata in 2001, 42-7 at Bellingham in 2000, 58-0 at Arcata in 1999, 36-17 at Bellingham in 1998, and 45-7 at Arcata in 1997. The teams had not met previously since 1962. The series began in 1956.

WESTERN REPORT: Entering the final week of their season, the Vikings are seeking to close the campaign with a winning record and to avenge a loss earlier in the season to Humboldt State.

Western ranks No.21 nationally among NCAA II schools in passing offense (267.4), No.32 in total offense (412.3) and No.33 in scoring offense (33.2). But the Vikings had their weakest outing of the season in last week's loss at Central, with season-lows of 17 points and 263 yards of offense. Despite that, Western scored on its opening possession for the sixth time in seven games, five of them touchdowns. The Vikings scored a touchdown on the second series in the other contest.

The leader of the offensive unit has been junior wide receiver Andy Olson, who ranks No.8 nationally in receiving yards (108.1), No.11 in receptions (7.0), and No.28 in scoring (8.7). He has 63 receptions for 973 yards and 13 touchdowns (one short of school record and two shy of GNAC standard), having a career-best 12 grabs last week. He has caught at least one touchdown pass in eight consecutive games, setting a school record and tying the GNAC standard, and has five 100-yard receiving games this season.

Senior quarterback Steve Nichols, who ranks No.20 nationally in total offense (262.8) and No.25 in passing efficiency (140.7), has completed 165-of-260 passes for 2,024 yards with 19 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. His 63.5 percent completion rate would be a school record if it holds up. Sophomore James Monrean, who tied a school record with five touchdown passes in the victory over Saint Joseph's IN, is 29-of-53 for 368 yards and six touchdowns.

Olson is just one of the targets they throw to. Redshirt freshman slotback Chris Robinson has 36 receptions for 400 yards and three touchdowns, and senior wide receiver James Laurence has 19 catches for 253 yards and two scores.

The tight ends have also played a key role. Junior Nick Yoney has 20 catches for 188 yards and four scores, senior Rick Carte 17 receptions for 185 yards and two touchdowns.

At running back, junior Duncan Sherrard has rushed for 718 yards and four touchdowns on 147 attempts, and has rushed for over 100 yards in three of the last four games. The line is led by led by junior center Loren Winter, who has started all but three games since the start of the 2001 season. Junior guard Will Freitag has also started every game this season.

The defense has allowed its lowest yardage totals of the season in the last two games, giving up just 176 yards against Western Oregon and 211 versus Central. Junior linebacker Craig Keenan leads in tackles with 77. Senior strong safety Rob White, Western's leading tackler the last two seasons, has 70 stops, two interceptions, and a team-high six passes broken up. Sophomore cornerback Sly Whitfield leads the team in interceptions with three.

Junior linebacker Adam Klingenberg has 49 tackles, including 6.0 for loss. The leader in tackles behind the line of scrimmage is junior tackle Noel Tafoya at 7.5, including a team-high 2.5 sacks. Junior end Joey Joshua has 24 tackles, including 4.5 for loss.

Senior kicker Michael Koenen ranks No.3 nationally in punting (43.3) and No.13 in field goals (1.1). He is 33-of-34 on extra points and 10-of-14 on field goals, with three of the misses coming from 49 yards or more. Koenen is averaging 43.3 yards on 36 punts, putting eight inside the 20, and has sent 14 kickoffs for touchbacks. On returns, sophomore Zach Russell is averaging 24.4 yards on seven kickoff returns, including a touchdown, and Olson has averaged 13.7 yards on 11 punt returns to rank No.17 nationally.

WESTERN NOTES: The shutout of Western Oregon was Western's first in 36 games (77-0 Montana Western, 2001) and its first league whitewash in 53 contests (58-0 Humboldt State, 1999) ... The Vikings are 61-19 at Bellingham's Civic Stadium during Smith's tenure as head coach. On the flip side, they have won just two of their last 10 road contests ... Western's win over Central on Sept. 25 snapped a string of four night-game losses ... The Vikings are 3-6 in overtime games ... In the first half against Nebraska-Omaha, Western had the ball for 25:55 and ran 58 plays ... Zach Russell's kickoff return for a touchdown against Saint Joseph's was the Vikings' first since Erik Totten performed the feat in 2000 ... Receiving GNAC Player of the Week honors this season have been linebacker Craig Keenan (Fort Lewis CO), quarterback Steve Nichols (Nebraska-Omaha), linebacker Jeff Parks (Central Washington 1), quarterback James Monrean (Saint Joseph's IN), wide receiver Andy Olson (Western Oregon 2) and Micheal Koenen (Western Oregon 2)

HUMBOLDT STATE REPORT: The Lumberjacks have already clinched their first non-losing season since 1995. They could grab a share of the GNAC title with a victory if Central was upset by Western Oregon.

Leading the Lumberjacks is senior wide receiver Dustin Creager, the GNAC's all-time leading pass catcher with career totals of 273 receptions for 3,861 yards and 35 touchdowns, all school and GNAC records. This season, he has 78 receptions for 968 yards (ranks No.9 nationally, 107.6) and 10 touchdowns. Last week against Western Oregon, he had 14 catches for 211 yards and two scores. Another key target is senior Mark Maples, a former second-team NAIA All-American at Dakota State who has 24 receptions for 281 yards and two scores, although he has just one catch in the last three games.

At quarterback is senior Jason Baughman, who has completed 170-of-290 passes for 1988 yards with 15 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He holds the single-game passing record for Humboldt State, throwing for 468 yards in the lone start of his junior season.

Junior running back Lionel Arnold has rushed for 480 yards and five touchdowns on 99 carries, and junior Daniel Nembhard has run for 435 yards and five scores on 120 attempts. Nembhard scored the winning touchdown with 3:27 left in the first meeting of the two teams this season. Leading the offensive line is senior tackle Jason Root, a second-team all-GNAC pick in 2003.

On defense, senior linebacker Nick White leads the Lumberjacks in tackles with 88, including 5.5 for loss. Senior tackle Eric Broden, a transfer from NCAA I-AA Sacramento State, leads the team in sacks (4.0), and overall tackles for loss (6.5).

In the secondary, senior free safety Christian Hodges has shares the GNAC lead in interceptions with four, has a team-high three fumbles forced, and has 70 tackles. Sophomore strong safety Kyle Killingsworth has 73 tackles and three interceptions.

Killingsworth is also the primary threat on special teams, averaging 22.6 yards on 17 kickoff returns.

TURNOVER/TAKEAWAY: Western is minus-16 in turnover/takeaway ratio (51 to 35) over the last two seasons, minus-8 this year (26 to 18) and minus-8 in 2003 (25 to 17), after being on the positive side in that category for 12 straight campaigns.

INJURY REPORT: Backup outside linebacker James Day will not travel this week after sustaining a knee injury in the Central game. Starting offensive guard Todd Gowing, who suffered a sprained ankle two weeks ago, has returned to action. It was determined last week that outside linebacker Jeff Parks (groin) will not play for the rest of the season.

MILESTONES: Junior wide receiver Andy Olson ranks No.3 among Western career leaders in touchdown catches with 25 (needs 5 to tie for No.1), No.4 in receptions with 145 (needs 3 to tie for No.3) and No.4 in receiving yards with 2,378 (needs 103 to tie for No.3). Junior running back Duncan Sherrard ranks No.6 in career rushing yards with 2,165, needs 58 to tie for No.5) and senior quarterback Steve Nichols is No.5 in career passing with 4,860 yards. Senior placekicker Michael Koenen ranks No.3 in career scoring (259, needs 9 to break record) and No.2 in kick scoring. He is No.3 among northwest small college career kick-scoring leaders.

OLSON GRABS: Junior wide receiver Andy Olson has caught at least one touchdown pass in each of the last eight games to set a school record and tie the GNAC mark. He ranks No.8 nationally in receiving yards (108.1) and No.11 in receptions (7.0). Olson has 13 touchdown catches this season, and needs one more to tie the school record. Olson had a career-high 12 catches for 124 yards and two touchdowns against Central Washington (2), four catches for 110 yards and one touchdown versus Humboldt State (1), nine catches for 184 yards and two touchdowns against Western Oregon (1), six catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns versus Nebraska-Omaha, and 10 catches for 119 yards and one touchdown against St. Cloud State MN. As a sophomore last season, Olson made 64 catches for 1,063 yards and nine touchdowns, finishing No.9 nationally in receiving yards per game (106.3) and No.17 in catches per games (6.1). He has five of the top 20 receiving games in school history, topped by a career-high 199-yard, 11-catch effort in a win last season over Saint Mary's CA. Olson also had touchdown receptions in seven straight games during the 2002 and 2003 seasons.

RADIO: KBAI (930 AM-Bellingham) is broadcasting all Western football games live this season with sports director Doug Lange handling the play-by-play duties for the ninth consecutive season. Providing the color commentary for the seventh straight year is former Viking quarterback Jason Stiles. The pre-game show, hosted by Mark Scholten, begins at 12:35 p.m. The KBAI broadcast can be picked up via the internet at wwuvikings.com.

The contest can also be heard on KATA (1340 AM-Arcata, CA) or via the internet at hsujacks.com with North Country Communications Sports Director J.B. Mathers doing the play-by-play and former Humboldt State tight end Christian Bloomquist handling the color commentary.

2003 RESULTS: Western finished 4-6, having a string of 12 straight non-losing seasons snapped, but won the GNAC championship with a perfect 3-0 record. Humboldt State was 3-9, losing its last six games, and 0-3 in league play.

LAST MEETING: Daniel Nembhard scored on a 5-yard run with 3:27 to play, lifting Humboldt State to its first victory over Western in 42 years, a 34-27 triumph in a GNAC game at Bellingham's Civic Stadium.

The Vikings had a six-game home winning streak snapped, and Humboldt State ended an eight-game road losing streak.

Western had rallied from a 17-point deficit, tying the game, 27-27, on a 5-yard run by Duncan Sherrard with 4:44 left. But Humboldt State responded by going 75 yards in just four plays for Nembhard's decisive score, the key play being a 49-yard rush by running back Lionel Arnold that put the ball on the Western 11.

Western failed to get a first down on the following series and were forced to punt, and the Lumberjacks then picked up two first downs to run out the clock.

Humboldt State's last victory over Western was a 32-0 triumph in 1962. The teams had met seven times since, all since 1997, with the Vikings winning each by margins of at least 14 points.

The Vikings started well, scoring on the opening play from scrimmage for the second time in three games as quarterback Steve Nichols threw a quick pass in the flat to wide receiver Andy Olson, who sprinted down the left sideline for a 76-yard touchdown. It was the sixth straight game with a touchdown catch for Olson.

But the Lumberjacks responded with 24 straight points from four drives that each lasted at least eight plays. Two of the scores came on touchdown passes from quarterback Jason Baughman to wide receiver Dustin Creager of six and 12 yards. The others were a 2-yard run by Arnold and a 29-yard field goal by Francisco Castellon.

The teams exchanged field goals late in the first half, giving the Lumberjacks a 27-10 advantage at halftime. Western narrowed the margin to 14 points on a 49-yard field goal by Michael Koenen late in the third quarter, then closed to 27-20 on a 7-yard run by Sherrard on the first play of the fourth quarter, a play set up on a 43-yard punt return by Olson.

Sherrard rushed for a game-high 153 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries for the Vikings. Nichols was 17-of-24 for 208 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Humboldt State had a 416-361 edge in total offense. Baughman completed 23-of-37 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns, with Dustin Creager having 11 receptions for 96 yards and both scores. Arnold led the Lumberjack rushing attack with 110 yards on 14 carries.

FAVORED AGAIN: For the seventh time in the last eight years, Western is either the favorite or co-favorite to win a league title in football. This season, the Vikings were tied with archrival Central to win the conference title in the GNAC coaches preseason poll. The only time during that stretch that they were not favored was in 1996.

The Vikings won the GNAC title last season with a perfect 3-0 record. It was their fourth league championship in five years, and sixth crown in nine seasons. They finished second in 1997 and 1998, and again in 2002.

2004 WESTERN PREVIEW: The Vikings will look to an experienced offense that returns eight starters to lead the way early in the season. Triggering that unit is senior quarterback Steve Nichols.

Junior wide receiver Andy Olson is Nichols' favorite target. Olson, named a preseason All-American by Don Hansen's Football Gazette, had 64 receptions for 1,063 yards and nine touchdowns last year, ranking ninth nationally in NCAA II in receiving yardage (106.3 per game).

Junior running back Duncan Sherrard has led the Vikings in rushing the last two seasons, running for 760 yards and three scores last year. Junior Jake Carlyle added 418 yards and five touchdowns rushing. They run behind an offensive line that returns four starters, led by junior center Loren Winter.

Defensively, Western is led by senior strong safety Rob White and junior defensive end Joey Joshua. White, the 2003-04 GNAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, had 90 tackles last year, leading the Vikings for the second consecutive season. Joshua had 43 tackles, including 9.5 behind the line of scrimmage.

Senior Michael Koenen handles all kicking duties. A consensus first-team All-America punter in 2002, he holds school records for longest punt (73 yards) and longest field goal (54 yards), and has sent 56 kickoffs for touchbacks.

PRESEASON PICKS: Two Western players, senior punter Michael Koenen and junior wide receiver Andy Olson, were named to the Don Hansen's Football Gazette preseason All-America Team. Koenen also was a second-team pick on the D2football.com preseason All-America squad.

LAST WEEK AGAINST CENTRAL WASHINGTON: A two-minute, 16-second span of the third quarter proved to be the difference as Western saw a 14-point lead slip away and fell to archrival Central Washington, 31-17, in the ninth annual Cascade Cup game at Tomlinson Stadium.

Central won its fifth consecutive victory, and clinched at least a share of the GNAC title. It was also the eighth consecutive home victory for the Wildcats.

Western held a 17-3 lead four minutes into the third quarter after quarterback Steve Nichols hit wide receiver Andy Olson on a slant pattern for a 23-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-1 play.

But after the two teams exchanged punts, the Wildcats, who had totaled just 57 yards of offense in the first half, scored three touchdowns in rapid succession to take control of the game.

Running back Emilio Iniguez, who finished with 118 yards on 26 carries, started the comeback with a 5-yard touchdown run, which he set up on the previous play with a 35-yard rumble. Just 15 seconds later, Nichols fumbled when sacked, and Central defensive end Jacob Galloway picked up the ball and scored the tying touchdown from three yards out.

But the run wasn't over, as on the following Western possession, an interception by Ryan Andrews put the ball at the Viking 15, setting up a 3-yard run by Willie Johnson that gave the Wildcats a 24-17 lead with 5:32 left in the third period.

Central picked up its final touchdown on a 1-yard fourth-down run by Johnson with 11:17 to go.

The Vikings had a 263-211 edge in total offense, but committed five turnovers, four in the second half.

Western took an early lead, scoring on its opening possession for the sixth time in the last seven games. The Vikings drove 74 yards in 11 plays, capped by an 18-yard pass from Nichols to Olson.

Olson had 12 receptions for 124 yards and two touchdowns. He set a school record and tied a GNAC record by catching a touchdown pass for the eighth consecutive game.

Nichols completed 17-of-30 passes for 174 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

The Vikings had a 10-3 lead at halftime as both teams connected on second-quarter field goals. Cody Sadler hit a 29-yarder eight seconds into the period for Central, then Western's Michael Koenen made a 36-yard attempt on the final play of the first half.

Koenen also made two extra points, giving him a school record of 136 during his four-year career.

It was Western's 12th loss in its last 13 trips to Ellensburg. The result also gave Central a 5-4 edge in Cascade Cup victories.
