BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University strong safety Steve Davis received co-Great Northwest Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors for Oct. 16-23.
Davis, a 5-foot-9, 190-pound redshirt freshman from Kennewick (Kamiakin High School graduate) made 10 tackles - six of them unassisted - and forced a fumble in the Vikings' come-from behind 28-24 victory against Humboldt State.
Davis, who has a team-high 60 tackles, is bidding to become the first freshman to lead Western in stops since Wayne Lewis in 1984. He has a team-best 39 solo tackles as well as an interception and a forced fumble.
Davis shared the weekly honor with Central Washington cornerback Brandon Kennedy.
Western (4-4 overall, 3-1 league) plays host to arch-rival Central on Saturday (1 p.m.) in the 10th annual Cascade Cup game.
