Four Vikings named GNAC Academic All-Stars

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Senior cornerback Brett Hall (Kennewick) and senior running back Duncan Sherrard (Seattle/Roosevelt) were each named for the third straight year to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic All-Star Football Team announced today.

Two other Western players recognized were senior defensive end Aaron Dahl (Gig Harbor) and sophomore strong safety Mike Schmit (Vancouver/Columbia River).

A computer science major, Hall is maintaining a 3.24 (4.0 scale) grade point average. He was credited with 40 tackles (30 solo), intercepting two passes and breaking up four, and forcing one fumble.

Sherrard, who is majoring in business administration and finance, has a 3.35 GPA. He ran for 503 yards and three touchdowns, finishing fourth among Western career rushing leaders with 2,761 yards.

Dahl is a physical education major with a 3.89 GPA, and Schmit is a business administration and finance major with a 3.35 GPA.

Dahl was credited with eight tackles, 3.0 for losses of 11 yards, and Schmidt had 11 stops.

To be eligible for the conference academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum GPA of 3.2 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university.

Twenty-Six Named To GNAC Academic Football Team

SPOKANE - A total of 26 student-athletes have been named to the 2005 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic football all-conference team.

For the second year in a row, Nate Brookreson of Central Washington has the highest cumulative grade point average among the academic all-stars. Brookreson, who led the conference in receiving yards (905) and scoring (13 touchdowns) and ranked second in receptions (61), carries a 3.92 GPA. He is an exercise science major .

CWU and Western Oregon each placed 10 players on the team, while Western Washington and Humboldt State had four and two, respectively.

Four players - Brookreson, Jon Apgar of Western Oregon and Duncan Sherrard and Brett Hall, both from Western Washington - were named to the academic team for the third year in a row. Brian Potucek also made the team for the third time also earning academic honors in 2002 and 2004.

Seven other players - Ryan Andrews, Coby Sadler, Josh Boonstra and Phil Dougherty (from 2003), all of Central Washington, and Jason Buckmier, Ryan Thorson and Dane Wagner, all of Western Oregon - all made the team for a second time.

To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university.
