BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Senior running back Jake Carlyle (Olympia/Capital) and sophomore outside linebacker Shane Simmons (Kent/Kentlake/Idaho) were honored as the respective Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year at the Western Washington University Football Awards Banquet Sunday at the Best Western Lakeway Inn.
Carlyle led Western with 657 yards rushing and six touchdowns. He finished seventh among school career rushing leaders with 1,571 yards.
Simmons was second on the team with 66 tackles (41 solo) and made five quarterback sacks for minus-41 yards. He also tied a school season record with four forced fumbles and had three fumble recoveries, two pass breakups and one pass interception.
Sophomore punter Corbin Anderson (Veradale/University) was the Vikings Special Teams Player of the Year. He averaged 34.8 yards per punt, placing 16 kicks inside the 20.
Senior wide receiver Andy Olson (Chehalis/W.F. West), who established school career marks for receptions (183) and touchdown receptions (31), received the Coach Terry Todd Most Inspirational Player Award for the second straight season.
Senior center Loren Winter (Bothell/Juanita) was named the Offensive Lineman of the Year and senior end Chase Schmidtz (Bellingham/Meridian/Moorpark JC) received Defensive Lineman of the Year honors. Schmitz also was given the Charles Lappenbusch Memorial Coaches Award.
Senior cornerback Brett Hall (Kennewick/Kennewick/Columbia Basin CC) received the Lou Parberry Strength Award. Senior defensive end Aaron Dahl (Gig Harbor) was the Senior Scholar Athlete and redshirt freshman strong safety Steve Davis (Kennewick/Kamiakin) was named Freshman Scholar Athlete.
Defensive end William Jackson (Fr., Seattle/O'Dea) and wide receiver Noah Jiles (Fr., Yakima/Eisenhower) received defensive and offensive Scout Team Player of the Year honors, respectively.
Booster Peter Rynders was the Chet Ullin Memorial "Viking Spirit" Award recipient.
Team captain awards went to Olson, Winter, senior inside linebacker Craig Keenan (Salem, MA/Hamilton-Wenham/Palomar JC) and senior tight end Nick Yoney (Arlington).
