COCONUT GROVE, Fla. - Freshman middle blocker Marissa Hill (North Bend/Mount Si) had match-highs of 16 kills and five service aces and Western Washington University had an overall attack percentage of .284 as the Vikings defeated Dowling College NY, 30-19, 29-31, 30-25, 30-23, at the Barry University Buccaneer Invitational Volleyball Tournament on Sunday at North Broward Prep School.
The Vikings, 3-0, close out the tourney at 9 a.m., meeting host and defending NCAA Division II national champion Barry. They opened the tourney with a five-game victory over the Buccaneers.
Hill had a .343 attack percentage. Middle blocker Tiana Roma (R-Fr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) finished with 14 kills (.545) for Western and outside hitter Sarah Primrose (Fr., Issaquah) had 10 kills (.226).
"It's really nice to see three of your freshmen in double-digit kills and hitting for a high percentage," said Western coach Diane Flick.
Two Vikings, outside hitter Jaime Anderson (So., SeaTac/Mount Rainier) and Courtney Schneider (So., Snohomish), tied for match-high honors in digs with 17 each. Middle blocker Lindsey Signer (So., Stanwood) led in blocks with five.
Dowling hit just .157. The Lions were led by Marta Slodnik with 14 kills, 17 digs and four service aces, all team highs.
