Western travels to AFCA No. 4 North Dakota

Sept. 13, 2005

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University Vikings (1-2) vs. University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux (3-0) at the Alerus Center (Indoor facility, AstroTurf, 13,500 capacity) in a non-conference contest at 11 a.m. PT on Saturday, Sept. 17, at Grand Forks, N.D.

Western is coming off a 38-20 loss to American Football Coaches Association/NCAA Division II No.15-ranked St. Cloud State MN last Saturday in its home opener. The Vikings began their season with a split of two road games. They defeated Mesa State CO, 49-20, on Aug. 27, and lost 31-21 to D2Football.com No.25-rated Washburn KS on Sept. 3.

North Dakota is ranked anywhere from first to fourth in four national polls (No.1-CollegeSportsReport.com, No.3-D2Football.com, No.3 Don Hansen's Football Weekly, No.4-AFCA national polls). The Fighting Sioux have won two road games, 44-20 at Central Washington on Aug. 27 and 51-6 at Winona State MN last week. In between those two victories was a 41-7 drubbing of No.15 West Chester PA at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, which ran their home winning streak to 19.

The Vikings finished 6-4 overall last year and tied for second place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with a 3-3 record. Western has won league titles four of the last six years and six crowns in 10 seasons. North Dakota was 11-3 in 2004 and tied for second in the North Central Conference at 4-2. The Fighting Sioux also made their second straight NCAA II national playoff appearance and fifth in the past seven seasons. North Dakota won three playoff games and advanced to the semifinals before falling to Pittsburg State KS, 19-13.

Western joins the NCC as a football-only member next fall. The Vikings have played six games with NCC opponents over the past three seasons, winning two and losing four. They split with Nebraska-Omaha and South Dakota State, while losing twice to St. Cloud State.

SERIES HISTORY: First meeting.

RADIO: KBAI (930 AM-Bellingham) is broadcasting all Western football games live this season with sports director Doug Lange handling the play-by-play duties for the 10th consecutive season. Providing the color commentary for the eighth straight year is former Viking quarterback Jason Stiles. The pre-game show with host Mark Scholten begins at 10:30 a.m. PT. The KBAI broadcast can also be heard on KLAY (1180 AM-Tacoma) and picked up via the Internet at wwuvikings.com.

The game also will be broadcast on the North Dakota Radio Network and carried on KQHT (96.1 FM-Grand Forks, ND).

2004 RESULTS: Western finished 6-4 and tied for second in the GNAC at 3-3. North Dakota was 11-3 and tied for second in the North Central Conference at 4-2. The Fighting Sioux also made their second straight NCAA II national playoff appearance and fifth in the past seven seasons. North Dakota won three playoff games, advancing to the semifinals where it fell 19-13 to Pittsburg State KS.

WESTERN REPORT: The Vikings are seeking to snap their first multiple-game losing streak since midway through the 2003 season. On offense, where they are averaging 30.0 points and 423.0 yards a contest, they will have to do it with a number of key threats missing.

Senior wide receiver Andy Olson, a preseason All-American in three publications who had 17 receptions for 248 yards and two touchdowns through two-and-a-half games, is out three-to-four weeks with a sprained knee. Also out are sophomore slotback Chris Robinson, the second-leading receiver in 2004 when he had 40 receptions, and senior running back Duncan Sherrard, Western's leading rusher each of the last three seasons.

Despite those missing weapons, the Viking offense did put up solid numbers last week against St. Cloud, as junior quarterback James Monrean threw for 329 yards and two touchdowns. For the season, Monrean is 68-of-110 for 861 yards, with eight touchdowns and three interceptions. He has also run for 71 yards.

Senior Jake Carlyle has started the last two games at running back. He has rushed for 150 yards and a touchdown on 37 carries this season, and has also been a receiving threat, with nine catches for 74 yards. With Olson out, sophomore slotback Brett Upchurch, who has 12 receptions for 148 yards and a touchdown, leads the receiving corps. Eight players are averaging at least a catch a game, and seven have caught touchdown passes.

Anchoring an experienced offensive line is senior center Loren Winter, a first-team all-GNAC pick last season.

On defense, six of Western's top nine tacklers are newcomers, led by sophomore outside linebacker Shane Simmons, a transfer from Idaho who has 25 tackles, including three for loss, and also has two fumbles forced and a fumble recovered. He joins two returning senior starters in the linebacker corps - outside linebacker Adam Klingenberg and middle linebacker Craig Keenan, who have 22 and 20 stops, respectively.

Redshirt freshman strong safety Steve Davis has 22 tackles and an interception, and junior strong safety Todd McClellan has 18 tackles, including two for loss.

Leading the defensive line is senior end Geoff Hise. Hise, who has three letters as an offensive lineman, has 12 stops, including a team-high 2.0 sacks, and has forced two fumbles.

On special teams, sophomore Corbin Anderson is averaging 34.0 yards a punt and has allowed just five of his 16 punts to be returned. Freshman Ace Younggren has connected on 12-of-13 extra-point attempts. In the return game, redshirt freshman Jordyn Jackson has averaged 23.1 yards on seven kickoff returns.

NORTH DAKOTA REPORT: Three Fighting Sioux seniors received preseason D2Football.com first-team All-America honors - linebacker Digger Anderson, safety Danny Gagner and offensive guard Chris Kuper.

On offense, junior quarterback Chris Belmore returns for his second season as a starter. Belmore completed 60.1 percent of his passes for 2,043 yards and 17 touchdowns with 10 interceptions in 2004. In three starts this season, he has completed 70.4 of his passes (38-of-54) for 448 yards and thrown for five touchdowns.

Two juniors split time at tailback, Brandon Strouth and Chris Beatty. Strouth, who rushed for 756 yards and four touchdowns as a backup last season, has gained 150 yards and scored two touchdowns in three games this year. Beatty, a part-time starter in 2002, received a medical redshirt in 2003 and had played in just four games the last two years. This season, he leads the Fighting Sioux with 213 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 40 carries.

Strouth and Beatty run behind a line that averages nearly 300 pounds. Kuper, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 305 pounds, was a first-team All-American in 2004.

Senior Dan Grossman, the lone returning starter at receiver for North Dakota, leads the team with 15 receptions for 197 yards.

Sophomore Weston Dressler has made an impact this season on both offense as a wide receiver and special teams as a returner. He caught three touchdown passes against Winona State and is second on the team with 164 receiving yards on 10 catches. Dressler returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown versus West Chester and returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown against Central Washington. He has punt and kickoff return averages of 14.2 and 35.0 yards, respectively, and leads the team with 582 all-purpose yards.

Anderson, an inside linebacker who is listed as a "pro hopeful" on D2Football.com, paces North Dakota's defense, which is giving up just 11.0 points and 74.7 rushing yards per game. He has 274 career tackles, including 104 last season, and is just two shy of the school record. During his career, Anderson has received nine All-American awards from various publications. He leads the Fighting Sioux with 19 stops this year.

Two senior linemen return in North Dakota's 3-4 defensive scheme. Nose guard Shane Duchscher recorded 45 tackles last season and defensive end Jason Peterson was credited with 37 tackles and four quarterback sacks. Both were second-team all-NCC selections in 2004.

North Dakota's secondary, which returns nearly intact, is led by Gagner, who already has three pass interceptions this season. A three-year starter at strong safety, Gagner recorded 70 tackles, five interceptions and nine pass breakups in 2004. He received All-American accolades from four publications last year.

At the other safety spot, senior Josh Brandsted returns after having 69 tackles and four interceptions, good for second-team all-NCC honors. Junior cornerback Jason Hoffschneider had four interceptions and 10 pass breakups as a starter in 2004.

The Fighting Sioux return both kicking specialists. Sophomore punter Brent Halfmann received second-team all-NCC honors in 2004 with a 37.9 average. Senior Jeff Glas, a first-team all-NCC pick last season, is a four-year starter at placekicker. He converted 21-of-34 field goals last season - including 8-of-12 from 40-49 yards.

NORTH DAKOTA AT HOME: North Dakota is 30-4 in its fifth season at the Alerus Center, a 13,500-seat indoor stadium. The Fighting Sioux have won 19 straight home games, dating back to a loss to Minnesota State Mankato in 2002. Western will be North Dakota's opponent for the Potato Bowl, a weeklong festival partnering the university with local potato growers. North Dakota is 15-3 in Potato Bowl games. The last team to defeat the Fighting Sioux in that game was Western's arch-rival and future NCC partner Central Washington. The Wildcats won 43-7 at the Alerus Center in 2002.

THE FIGHTING SIOUX IN THE PLAYOFFS: North Dakota has made the NCAA II playoffs in five of the last seven seasons, including 2001, when the Fighting Sioux won their first national championship as they rallied from a late four-point deficit to defeat Grand Valley State MI 17-14 in Florence, Ala. North Dakota was the national runner-up in 2003, losing 10-3 to Grand Valley State in the title game. In all, the Fighting Sioux have made 11 NCAA II playoff appearances.

WESTERN INJURY REPORT: Starting wide receiver Andy Olson suffered a sprained MCL in his left knee versus St. Cloud State MN last week and will miss three to four weeks. Starting running back Duncan Sherrard had arthroscopic surgery on his knee last week after being injured in the season opener against Mesa State CO and will be out four to five weeks. Reserve wide receiver Chris Robinson, the 2004 GNAC Freshman of the Year, missed the St. Cloud State game because of a hamstring pull and will not play this week as well. Reserve offensive guard Zach Myers also will miss the North Dakota game with a sprained ankle suffered last week against St. Cloud State.

OLSON STREAKS AND MILESTONES: Senior wide receiver Andy Olson had a school and GNAC record string of touchdown catches end at 11 games as he suffered a knee injury and had to leave the game late in the first half. He ranks No.3 among Western career leaders in touchdown catches (29, 1 short of record), receptions (167, 14 short of record) and receiving yards (2,728, 540 short of record).

Olson has caught passes for over 100 yards in eight of his last 12 games. Last year, Olson set school and league records by making 15 touchdown catches. He had 68 receptions overall for 1,075 yards. He ranked No.9 nationally in receiving yards per game (107.5 avg.) and broke his own GNAC record. He also finished No.12 nationally in receptions per game (6.8).

In three games this season, Olson has 17 catches for 248 yards and two touchdowns.

WESTERN NOTES: Monrean was named GNAC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against Mesa State. In four career starts, including three this season, Monrean has thrown 14 touchdown passes ... Senior running back Duncan Sherrard ranks fifth among school career leaders in rushing yards with 2,352. He needs 286 to move into fourth place ... Sherrard's 61-yard touchdown scamper against Mesa State was the Vikings' longest run from scrimmage since 1999 ... Western's 49 points against the Mavericks were the most scored by the Vikings in an opener since 1929.

HOME OPENERS: The Vikings are 12-5 in home openers under head coach Rob Smith, but have won just two of their last seven, and are 61-20 (.753) overall at Civic Stadium.

COACHES: Rob Smith (Washington, 1981) is in his 17th year as head coach and his victory total (106-58-1) and winning percentage (.645) are the best in Western history. Smith has directed the Vikings to their only five national playoff berths in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1999, and guided them to their best regular-season (No.1, 1995) and final (No.1, 1995) national rankings. He was named GNAC Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2003, Columbia Football Association Coach of the Year in 1989, 1995, 1996, 1999 and 2000, and American Football Coaches Association College Division Region V Coach of the Year in 1995 and 1996.

Dale Lennon (North Dakota, 1985) has shattered the North Dakota coaching record books since taking over the Fighting Sioux in 1999. He has a school-best .779 winning percentage and has led North Dakota to one national title, two title-game appearances and three NCC championships in six seasons. Lennon is a three-time NCC Coach of the Year and was the 2001 AFCA National Coach of the Year. Lennon has a 72-26 career record as a head coach, including a 60-17 mark at North Dakota. Lennon previously was 12-9 as the head coach at the University of Mary ND.

TURNOVER/TAKEAWAY RATIO: Western has had seven takeaways and four turnovers in three games this season. The Vikings have had a minus turnover/takeaway ratio over the past two seasons after being on the positive side in that category for 12 straight campaigns.

VIKINGS JOIN NCC IN FOOTBALL BEGINNING IN 2006: Western has been admitted as a football-only member of the North Central Conference, one of the nation's most prestigious NCAA II alignments. The Vikings, along with arch-rival Central Washington, will begin playing a full slate of eight NCC games in 2006. The two schools had been competing as part of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The NCC, founded in 1921, currently has seven members - Augustana SD, Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota State Mankato, Nebraska-Omaha, North Dakota, St. Cloud State MN, and South Dakota. Over the past three years, the NCC has had three of its member institutions leave to move up to NCAA Division I. North Dakota State and South Dakota State left after the 2003-04 academic year, and Northern Colorado left after 2002-03. In 2004, NCC member North Dakota finished 11-3 and reached the semifinals of the NCAA II national playoffs. St. Cloud State, which reached the first round of the playoffs, and NCC champion Nebraska-Omaha each had 8-3 records. North Dakota played in the NCAA II national championship game in 2003 and won a national title in 2001. Last season, Western split a pair of games with NCC schools, defeating Nebraska-Omaha, 31-21, and losing to St. Cloud State, 44-29. The Vikings have played six games with NCC foes over the past three seasons, splitting with Nebraska-Omaha and South Dakota State, and losing twice to St. Cloud State.

PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA PICKS: Western senior wide receiver Andy Olson was named to the Don Hansen's Football Gazette preseason All-America Team for the second straight year. He also was a second-team preseason All-American on www.CollegeSportsReport.com and d2football.com. Senior offensive center Loren Winter was a third-team www.CollegeSportsReport.com pick.

GNAC PRESEASON POLL: For the first time in nine years, Western is neither the favorite nor co-favorite to win a league title in football. This season, the Vikings were voted second behind arch-rival Central Washington in the GNAC Coaches Preseason Poll. The only other time during the past decade that they were not favored was in 1996.

The Vikings placed second in the GNAC in 2004 with a 3-3 record. They have won four league championships over the past six years, and six crowns in the last 10 campaigns. Western's lowest finish during that stretch was second in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2004.

Western got one first-place vote in this year's poll, with Central receiving the other three. The Wildcats finished with 15 points on the 4-3-2-1 system, with Western getting 12, Humboldt State nine and Western Oregon four.

LAST WEEK: Running back Matt Birkel rushed for 204 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries and quarterback Daniel Kaczor threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score as nationally ranked St. Cloud State defeated Western, 38-20, in a non-conference game at Civic Stadium.

Western fell to 1-2 with its second consecutive loss to a nationally ranked opponent. St. Cloud State, ranked No.15 in the AFCA/NCAA II Top 25, improved to 3-0, and has outscored its opponents 126-27.

Kaczor, who completed 15-of-21 passes for 209 yards, had all of his scoring passes in the second half, connecting on a 65-yard score with Ed DeShazer on SCSU's opening possession of the third quarter, and a pair of 10-yard passes to Ryan Koch.

Western did not score until the third quarter, when quarterback James Monrean found tight end Nick Yoney in the end zone on a 27-yard pass that capped an eight-play, 84-yard drive. Monrean, who completed 26-of-41 passes for 329 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, also threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Casey Dell with 10 seconds left in the game.

Running back Jake Carlyle added the other Viking touchdown on a 9-yard run midway through the fourth period. St. Cloud State had a 474-374 edge in total offense, holding Western to just 45 yards rushing on 29 attempts and sacking Monrean nine times, with tackle Jordan Kroll having two of the sacks.

In three career games against Western, Birkel, a 5-foot-9, 230-pound senior, has rushed for 605 yards and five touchdowns. It was his 21st career 100-yard rushing game and sixth career 200-yard contest.

St. Cloud State needed just 74 seconds to reach the scoreboard. Tate Wheeler returned the opening kickoff 69 yards to the Western 25, and three plays later, Birkel ran into the end zone from five yards out. The Huskies extended the lead to 10-0 on their next possession, going 80 yards in 14 plays to set up a 32-yard field goal by Shawn Braunagel with 4:48 left in the first quarter.

St. Cloud State held a 17-0 lead at halftime, as Kaczor scored on a 1-yard sneak with 5:47 left in the first half. The Huskies had a 211-109 edge in total offense in the first half, and Western did not get the ball inside the St. Cloud State 40 until the final 90 seconds of the second quarter, shortly after an interception by Viking strong safety Steve Davis.

Western wide receiver Andy Olson injured his left knee with 5:07 left in first half. He did not return, ending his school and Great Northwest Athletic Conference record streak of 11 consecutive games with a touchdown reception. Olson has 29 career scoring catches, just one short of the school record. He is expected to miss three-to-four weeks with an MCL injury.
