Western drops GNAC opener, 2-1 to Humboldt State

Sept. 22, 2005

Box Score

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Humboldt State University scored the decisive goal with nine minutes to go, defeating Western Washington University, 2-1, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game Thursday at the Whatcom CC Soccer Field.

The loss drops Western, which was playing its GNAC opener, to 1-8-1 overall. Humboldt State improved to 7-5-0 overall (despite being outscored 17-11) and 1-1-0 in conference play with its third straight victory. The triumph snapped a 14-game league losing streak for the Lumberjacks, who notched their first GNAC win in three seasons.

Forward Trel Mangarin got the game-winner for Humboldt State, intercepting a pass inside the penalty area, dribbling a few yards toward the end line, then chipping in a shot from 10 yards out.

The goal was the third goal in a span of less than 17 minutes. Humboldt State had opened the scoring in the 65th minute, as Matt Colwell tracked down a loose ball and fed Andres Ripa, who finished with a shot from nine yards.

The Vikings evened the score in the 73rd minute. Midfielder Kris Pope (Sr., Everett/Jackson) fed a pass in from the left side to forward Mirza Memic (Fr., Bellevue/Newport). Memic knocked the ball to forward Jacob Haddock (Jr., Burlington/Burlington/Edison), who hooked a shot in from eight yards straight out for his first goal of the season.

"It was great to see Haddock get his first goal," said Western coach Travis Connell. "A lot of times, getting the first gives you the confidence to score more. We had a couple bad bounces go against us tonight, and that cost us the game."

Connell praised the play of midfielder Filomon Afenegus (Sr., Spokane/North Central), who nearly tied the game with six minutes left, forcing a save by Lumberjack goalkeeper Brendan Bourdage from point-blank range.

Humboldt State had a 15-11 edge in shot attempts. Western goalkeeper Ben Dragavon (Sr., Monroe) had four saves.

Western hosts Seattle University on Saturday (7 p.m.) in a GNAC contest at Civic Stadium.
