BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Outside hitter Jaime Anderson (So., SeaTac/Mount Rainier) had a career-high 14 kills, helping Western Washington University defeat Northwest Nazarene University, 30-22, 30-11, 30-24, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Thursday on Haggen Court at Carver Gym.
The Vikings improved to 8-6 overall and 4-2 in the GNAC. Northwest Nazarene fell to 5-9 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The Crusaders, who were led by the eight kills of Kristy Wigren, are 1-6 on the road.
Western used late runs to break open each of the first two games. The opening game was tied at 21-21 before the Vikings used a 9-1 charge to close it out. In the second game, Western held a 15-11 lead, then ran off 15 consecutive points behind the serve of setter Katie Robinson (So., Everson/Nooksack Valley). Anderson had four kills in the run.
In the third game, Western opened up an 18-7 lead. Northwest Nazarene staged a comeback, pulling to within three points at 27-24 before the Vikings closed out the match.
Outside hitter Krystal Knight (Sr., Sumner) had 10 kills for Western, which had a .315 attack efficiency. Libero Courtney Schneider (So., Snohomish) added a match-high 21 digs.
"We controlled the chaos on our side of the net and turned it into solid attacks," said Western coach Diane Flick. "It's something we've been working on and it is nice to see it come out on the court."
Western, which is 51-3 at home since the 2000 season, hosts AVCA/NCAA Division II nationally No.18-ranked Seattle Pacific University on Saturday (2 p.m.).
