Simmons named NCC co-defensive Player of the Week

Oct. 1, 2007

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University football middle linebacker Shane Simmons has been named North Central Conference defensive co-Player of the Week for his performance in the Vikings' 22-14 loss at Minnesota Duluth last Saturday.

Simmons, a senior from Kent (graduate of Kentlake High School), was credited with a career-high 18 tackles (10 solo, 8 assists), including one sack for a loss of 11 yards.

The 6-foot-1, 230-pound Simmons leads the league in tackles with 51. He has had double-figure tackles in eight of the nine games he has played for Western since transferring from NCAA I-FCS Idaho.

Simmons was named to the 2007 preseason D2Football.com All-America second team. A second-team all-NCC choice last year, he was leading the NCAA II in solo tackles per game (9.8) until his season ended after five games because of a shoulder injury.

Western (1-3, 0-3 NCC) looks to snap a three-game losing streak Saturday (1 p.m.), entertaining St. Cloud State MN (3-2, 0-2 NCC) at Bellingham's Civic Stadium.
