Oct. 25, 2007

Box Score

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Outside hitter Jaime Anderson (Sr., SeaTac/Mount Rainier) had a match-high 17 kills as Western Washington University swept Seattle University, 30-21, 30-18, 30-14, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball contest Thursday on Haggen Court at Sam Carver Gymnasium.

The Vikings, ranked No.2 in the NCAA Division II Pacific Region, improved to 16-4 overall and lead the GNAC at 12-1. It was the 11th straight victory for Western, nine of them via sweeps.

Seattle fell to 10-12 overall and 7-7 in the conference. Outside hitter Jessica Gunderson led the Redhawks with nine kills.

The Vikings had an attack efficiency of .360, their second-best mark of the season and their best in GNAC play, notching 54 kills and having just nine errors in 125 attempts. Outside hitter Emily Castro (Sr., Bellingham/Meridian) had 14 kills and one error in 28 attempts, and middle blocker Angie Alvord (Jr., Laurel/Meridian) had 10 kills in 20 errorless attempts.

The first game was the closest of the three. Seattle, which got five kills from outside hitter Nikole Thompson in the opening game, had an 18-17 lead before the Vikings went on a 9-1 run to take control at 26-19. Castro and Roma each had two kills in the charge.

Libero Courtney Schneider (Sr., Snohomish), who entered the game ranked second nationally in digs per game at 7.43, had a match-high 27 digs. That put her just fractionally behind Mayssa Bazzi of Wayne State. Bazzi is averaging 7.4933 digs a game, Schneider 7.4930. Schneider also upped her school and GNAC career-record total to 2,376, which ranks sixth all-time in NCAA II.

Schneider's career per game average of 6.86 is national-record pace, well ahead of the current standard (6.06). She was the national leader in 2006 and placed fourth in 2005.

Western, 8-1 at home this season, concludes its three-game home stand Saturday, Oct. 27 (7 p.m.), entertaining Montana State Billings in a GNAC counter.
