BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University quarterbacks threw six touchdown passes, but the defense was dominant as the Vikings held their final intrasquad scrimmage of the preseason Friday at Civic Stadium.
The defense held the offense to just one first down in the first five series before on first play of a drive starting from the defensive 20, quarterback Adam Perry (Jr., Longview/R.A. Long) rolled right and threw back to running back Tyler Roberts (So., Friday Harbor) down the left sideline for a 20-yard touchdown.
Perry also threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Casey Dell (Sr., Moxee/East Valley) late in the scrimmage, capping a 3-play, 70-yard drive in a two-minute drill. He also had completions of 15 yards to Travis McKee (Jr., Bothell) and 34 yards to Rick Copsey (So., Camas) in the drive.
No.2 quarterback Tony Gardiner (Jr., Bothell) threw three touchdown passes. He hit tight end Zak Hekker (So., Bothell) for a 4-yard score and wide receiver Kyle Smith (R-Fr., Hoquiam) on a 6-yard toss to cap short-yardage situations, and tossed a 9-yard scoring strike to Hekker to finish off a 2-play, 25-yard drive.
The final touchdown of the day came as Chris Bolt (Fr., Lynden) hit Dirk Dallas (Fr., Lynden) for a 20-yard touchdown at the end of 10-play, 70-yard drive.
The defense registered 10 sacks, with linebacker Phil Urlacher (R-Fr., Pasco) having three. The offense had 16 first downs, but nine of them came in the final three series.
Western opens its season Sat., Sept. 1 at UC Davis.
