BELLINGHAM, Wash. - An own goal in the 55th minute proved to be the difference as Western Washington University defeated Humboldt State University, 1-0, in a non-conference men's soccer game Monday at Orca Field on the campus of Whatcom CC.
It was the home opener for the Vikings, who improved to 1-1-1. HSU is now 0-2-0. The Vikings claimed their first victory of the season after goals allowed late in their first two games cost them a tie and a triumph.
"It was a gutty, gutty performance," said Western coach Travis Connell. "The guys were sick and tired of giving up late goals, they got better and better as the second half went on."
Forward Darragh Simm (Sr., Woodinville) did much of the work to create Western's goal, beating two defenders to get deep in the penalty area, then playing a low cross that hit two Humboldt State players and ricocheted into the net.
The Vikings also had the best opportunity of the opening half, as Tyler Bjork's (Jr., Kirkland/Juanita) shot from eight yards forced an acrobatic save by Lumberjack goalkeeper Kyle Verle.
Western had a 20-4 edge in shots, with goalie Christian Warman (Sr., Sedro-Woolley) making four saves to earn his first shutout of the season.
Western next travels to face Metro State CO on Sunday (2:30 p.m.).
