Vikings open northern California road trip with split

March 29, 2011

Box Score - Game 1

Box Score - Game 2

SEASIDE, Calif. - Samantha Rutherford (Sr., Kenmore/Inglemoor) drove in six runs, one shy of the school record, as Western Washington University began its northern California road trip with a 13-5 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in the opener of a non-conference softball doubleheader Tuesday at Otter Field.

The Vikings, ranked No.9 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, fell 3-1 in the nightcap.

Western's record is now 20-3 and CSUMB is 14-19.

In the first game, Rutherford was 3-for-3 with six RBI and two runs scored to lead a season-best 13-hit attack by the Vikings.

Rutherford doubled across two runs during a three-run, fifth inning rally that put Western ahead 4-2, and then drove in three more with a bases-loaded double in a four-run sixth. She also drew a bases-loaded walk in the Vikings' five-run seventh.

Western pitcher Erika Quint (Sr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap) had her 22-1/3 scoreless innings streak snapped in the bottom of the first, yielding a two-run homer to Shea Olds. It was Olds' ninth home run of the season and was just the fourth Quint has given up this season.

But Quint settled down and blanked the Otters for the next five innings in improving her record to 14-0. She struck out 10, her eighth game this season with 10 or more strikeouts, a school record and just two away from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standard.

Jenna DeRosier (Fr., Kelso) pitched the final inning for the Vikings, yielding three runs.

Meghan Carrillo (Fr., Prunedale, CA/North Monterey County), Caitlin Dotlich (Sr., Sedro-Woolley/Burlington-Edison) and Stephanie Fox (Jr., Sammamish/Eastlake) each had two hits for Western. Dotlich drove in two runs as did Jackie Rothenberger (So., Coquitlam, B.C./Gleneagle Secondary).

In the second game, CSUMB pitcher Kylie Linnane (6-4) held the Vikings to three hits and one run, walking five and striking out five.

CSUMB took a 3-0 lead with a run in the second and two more in the fourth.

Western got its only run in the fourth when Fox walked, went to second on a wild pitch, and to third on a double by Michelle Wrigley (Sr., Bothell/Inglemoor), her 12th of the season. Fox scored on a sacrifice fly by Jessica Carey (Jr., Everett).

Devyn Baker (Fr., Montesano) (1-1) pitched a complete game for the Vikings.

Western travels to Sonoma State (18-9) on Wednesday (1 p.m.) for a doubleheader.
