LACEY, Wash. - Western Washington University pitcher Erika Quint (Sr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap) had her third double-digit strikeout effort of the season and the nationally ranked Vikings had 23 hits to remain undefeated by sweeping a softball doubleheader with Saint Martin's University, 8-4 and 9-3, to open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Saturday at SMU field.
The Vikings, ranked No.23 in this week's regular-season National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Top 25 Poll, improved to 7-0 overall as they played for the first time since Feb. 13.
Saint Martin's dropped to 1-6.
In the opener, Western took a 7-0 lead, scoring two runs in both the first and third innings and three in the fifth.
Quint (5-0) blanked the Saints for five innings before allowing a two-run homer by Morgan Klemm in the sixth. Quint also allowed two runs in the seventh, finishing with 12 strikeouts while allowing nine hits and walking two.
Jessica Carey (So., Everett), Meghan Carrillo (Fr., Prunedale, CA/North Monterey County) and Jackie Rothenberger (So., Coquitlam, B.C./Gleneagle Secondary) each had two hits for the Vikings, and Rachelle Berry (So., Alger/Burlington-Edison) drove in two runs.
In the nightcap, Western broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the fourth, one on a Carey single. The Vikings scored another run in the fifth and three more in the seventh.
Saint Martin's scored two runs in the first, one on a leadoff home run by Lacey McGladrey, off Western starter Jenna DeRosier (Fr., Kelso). She was relieved by Erika Hendron (So., Redmond) (1-0), who allowed just one run in 6-2/3 innings.
Carrillo and Rutherford each had two hits and one run batted in. Rutherford also scored two runs as did Brooke Rychard (Fr., Kirkland/Juanita).
Western had a school-record seven doubles, one by Michelle Wrigley (Sr., Bothell/Inglemoor) in the seventh that plated two runs.
Carillo finished 4-for-8 on the day. She leads the team with a .632 batting average (12-for-19).
The Vikings and Saint Martin's are slated to play another twinbill Sunday, beginning at 12 noon.
