BURNABY, BC - Western Washington University fell twice, 11-1 in five innings and 7-5, to Simon Fraser University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Saturday at Beedie Field on the SFU campus.
It was the first league action for both schools.
WWU fell to 2-10 overall and Simon Fraser improved to 6-1.
A bases-clearing double by Jessica Carey (Sr., Everett) highlighted a four-run WWU sixth inning that tied the nightcap at 5-5. But Simon Fraser scored twice in the bottom of that frame on a two-out home run by Britany Ribeiro.
In the top of the seventh, WWU got two runners on with just one out before reliever Cara Lukawesky got the final two outs to notch her fifth win in as many decisions.
Jackie Rothenberger (Jr., Coquitlam, B.C.) and Krista Bickar (Sr., Hoquiam) each had two hits in that contest for the Vikings. Rothenberger drove in a run in the fourth and Melissa Becker (Jr., Puyallup/Graham-Kapowsin) brought in WWU's first run in the sixth with a single.
Simon Fraser scored single runs in the second, third and fourth, and two in the fifth.
In the opener, WWU managed just two hits, both singles, off Lukawesky. Those were by Kristen Allen (Jr., Arlington/Bellevue CC) and Stephanie Fox (Sr., Sammamish/Eastlake).
Fox drove in the Vikings' only run in the fifth after Rothenberger had a lead-off walk and Allen was hit by a pitch.
Simon Fraser's Leah Riske was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two runs batted in. She had a two-run home run in the third, one of three by the Clan in the inning, as Sammie Olexa had a solo shot and Trisha Bouchard a two-run blow.
Olexa and Bouchard each had three RBIs.
WWU has another conference doubleheader at Simon Fraser on Sunday (1 p.m.).
