WWU battles, but loses two more at Simon Fraser

BURNABY, B.C. - Held to eight hits, seven of them singles, Western Washington University dropped both ends of a doubleheader, 8-5 and 3-1, in Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball action Sunday at Beedie Field on the SFU campus.

The Vikings, who have dropped six straight, fell to 2-12 overall and 0-4 in GNAC play.

Simon Fraser, which swept the two-day, four-game series, improved to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in conference action. The Clan was led by Kelsey Haberl, who was 5-for-6 on the day, driving in four runs and scoring three.

In the opener, WWU fell behind 7-0 before scoring five unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning. The big hits for the Vikings were a two-run single by Meghan Carrillo (So., Prunedale, CA) and a two-run homer by Amanda Flores (So., Ferndale), the first of her two-year career.

Simon Fraser scored one more run in its half of the inning, and Cara Lukawesky retired all three batters she faced in the seventh as she remained unbeaten in six decisions.

The Clan scored two runs in the first on a home run by Haberl, who also singled in a the sixth-inning run. Simon Fraser plated two unearned runs in the third and scored three in the fifth, Leah Riske driving in one with a double and Trisha Bouchard bringing home two more with a two-bagger.

In the nightcap, Simon Fraser pitcher Kelsie Hawkins (2-1) allowed just three hits, all singles, over six innings. Two of those were by Jessica Carey (Sr., Everett), who leads WWU with a .372 batting average.

The Vikings' only run was unearned. Carey led off the first with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice and scored on an error.

The Vikings had just five base runners the rest of the way with only two reaching second.

Simon Fraser scored all its runs in the bottom of the first. Carly Lepoutre had a leadoff bunt single and scored on a double by Lauren Mew. Mew scored on a double by Haberl, who following a sacrifice came home on a single by Sammie Olexa.

WWU makes its home debut on March 6 (1 p.m.) and 7 (1 p.m.) with doubleheaders against Montana State University Billings.
