MOUNT VERNON, Wash. - Western Washington University's Jenna DeRosier (So., Kelso) prevailed in a pitchers duel as the Vikings snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over Montana State University Billings in the nightcap of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader played Tuesday in below freezing weather at the Skagit Valley CC Field.

The Vikings, who lost the opener 6-3, are 3-13 overall and 1-5 in GNAC play. MSUB is 7-4 overall and 4-2 in conference action.

In the second game, DeRosier (1-5) got out of a two-on, no-out jam in the first inning, while holding the Yellowjacks scoreless until the sixth.

WWU scored the game's first run in the second as Amanda Flores (So., Ferndale) was hit by a pitch to lead off. Pinch runner Allie Crowe (Fr., Auburn/Thomas Jefferson) advanced on a passed ball and scored on a single by Meghan Carrillo (So., Prunedale, CA).

The Vikings extended their lead to 2-0 in the fifth when Cheyenne Best (Fr., Big Lake/Sedro-Woolley) led off with a single, went to third on a single by pinch hitter Melissa Becker (Jr., Puyallup/Graham-Kapowsin) and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jessica Carey (Sr., Everett).

MSUB tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth. Bobbie Lee led off with a home run down the leftfield line, and after Rose Harrington singled off DeRosier and Meg Harasymczuk followed with another single, Harrington scored on a ground out by Emily Osborn.

WWU went ahead with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Carrillo walked and pinch runner Kristen Allen (Jr., Arlington) went to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a throwing error by the third baseman. After a strikeout, she scored on a wild pitch.

In the seventh, the Yellowjackets got one base runner on, but DeRosier struck out Lee to end the game.

MSUB pitcher Jessyka MacDonald (0-2) struck out 11, gave up five hits and walked one. Two of the three Viking runs off her were unearned.

In the opener, MSUB led 6-0 after three innings, two of the runs being unearned. But Viking pitcher Janelle Kasch (Fr., Snohomish) worked out of jams in the fifth and seventh in going the distance. She gave up seven hits, all singles, walked nine and struck out four.

WWU scored twice in the third, the second on a double by Flores, who had two in the game.

The Vikings got one more in the fifth, Carrillo driving in Krista Bickar (Sr., Hoquiam), who walked for the third time to lead off the inning.

WWU had two runners on with no outs in the sixth and again in the seventh with one out, but could not score against Annaleisha Parsley (2-1).

Parsley got the complete-game victory, scattering nine hits, walking six and striking out six.

MSUB's Nicole Wilkerson had four hits for the Yellowjacks, going 3-for-3 in the first game. Flores and Carrillo each had three hits for WWU. Flores is hitting .500 (6-for-12) in the last five games.

WWU hosts MSUB on Wednesday (1 p.m.) in another GNAC twinbill at SVCC.
