BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University scored just two runs, only one of them earned, on eight hits as it lost both games to Western Oregon University, 2-0 and 3-2, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Wednesday at Viking Field on the WWU campus.
WOU, which improved to 21-24 overall and 17-15 in conference play, was the home team as the games were make-ups of a rained out doubleheader at Monmouth, Ore. The Wolves have won 15 of their last 20 games following a 6-19 start.
The Vikings dropped to 16-33 overall and 12-20 in league action.
WOU's Myranda Sawyer (8-5) pitched a two-hit shutout in the opener.
The Vikings got both of their hits in the first inning, Jessica Carey (Sr., Everett) leading off with a double and going to third on a one-out single by Rachelle Berry (Jr., Alger/Burlington-Edison).
But Sawyer got out of the jam with two strikeouts. The only WWU base runners after that got on via three walks and a hit batter.
WWU pitcher Jenna DeRosier (So., Kelso) matched Sawyer for the first five innings before allowing two runs, only one of them earned, in the sixth. DeRosier gave up just five hits in her six innings of work.
Danielle Harcourt had two hits for the Wolves, scoring one of the runs in the sixth on a double by Jourdan Williams. Harcourt finished with four hits on the day.
In the nightcap, WOU's Ashlie Gardner hit a solo home run to lead off the fifth, just her second of the season, to break a 2-2 tie. That run stood up as Hannah Pomeroy (7-9) allowed just two runs in pitching a complete game. She scattered six hits, striking out seven and walking two.
The Vikings were held hitless for the last three innings.
WWU pitcher Stephanie Fox (Sr., Sammamish/Eastlake) (8-8) lost for just the third time in her last nine decisions.
The Vikings play host to Central Washington University on Friday (1 p.m.) in a GNAC doubleheader.
