WWU dominates 27th annual UPS J.D. Shotwell Invitational

TACOMA, Wash. - Western Washington University dominated the 27th annual University of Puget Sound J.D. Shotwell Invitational Track and Field meet Saturday at Baker Stadium on the UPS campus.

The Vikings won both divisions by large margins in the 12-team competition. They had a 180 to 112 edge in the men's division over second-place Puget Sound, and a 263-1/2 to 113 advantage in the women's division over runner-up Pacific Lutheran.

"We had a great team performance today," said head coach Pee Wee Halsell (25th year). "We had a lot of solid efforts and really seem to be coming around."

Emily Warman (Sr., Sedro-Woolley) had WWU's best performance, bettering her NCAA Division II provisional national qualifying mark in winning the women's triple jump with an effort of 39-1 1/4.

Michelle Howe (Sr., Lakewood) was a triple-event winner for the Vikings. She placed first in the women's 100 meters (12.93) and ran the second leg on both the winning 4x100 (49.65) and 4x400 (4:05.71) relays. The other three runners on the two foursomes were Eleanor Siler (Sr., Spokane/Lewis & Clark), who finished second in the 400 (59.38); Alex McDonald (Jr., Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck) and Valle Ledtke (Jr., Skamokawa/Wahkiakum).

Double-event winners for the WWU men were Shane Gruger (Sr., Shoreline/Shorewood), Nathan Schmidt (Fr., Lynnwood) and Nelson Westlin (Jr., Bellingham/Sehome),

Gruger led 1-2-3-4 sweeps in the 100 (10.93) and 200 (22.04), Schmidt won the 400 (49.58) and helped the 4x400 relay (3:25.91) to victory, and Westlin took both the shot put (49-8 1/4) and discus (145-2).

Completing the 11 event winners for the Viking men were Braden Timpe (So., Enumclaw) in the 1,500 (4:01.22), Eric Brill (Sr., Kent/Kentwood) in the 5,000 (14:46.79), Jeff Sloat (Fr., Sammamish/Eastlake) in the 400 hurdles (56.30), Brett Watson (Fr., Ferndale) in the high jump (6-3 1/4) and Michael Hoffman (Sr., Bellingham/Sehome) in the hammer (188-11).

In all, WWU won 10 women's events with the other victors being Katelyn Steen (Fr., Sammamish/Eastlake) in the 5,000 (17:56.41), Brittany Grandy (Fr., Sedro-Woolley) in the high jump (5-2 1/2), Cheyenna Pinley (Fr., Bellingham/Squalicum) in the pole vault (10-11 3/4), Emily Walters (So., Olympia) in the long jump (18-1), Lindsay Wells (So., Seattle/Nathan Hale) in the hammer (157-4) and Katie Reichert (Fr., Kelso) in the javelin (142-5).

The Vikings next compete in the Central Washington University Invitational on Saturday, Apr. 14.
