MONMOUTH, Ore. - Michael Hoffman (Sr., Bellingham/Sehome) won the hammer for the third straight year and Shane Gruger (Sr., Shoreline/Shorewood) placed first in the 200 meters and ran the anchor leg on the winning 4x100 relay as Western Washington University captured its second men's title in three years and third overall at the 11th Annual Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships which ended Saturday at McArthur Stadium.

The Vikings dominated the men's division with a winning point total of 205, 78-1/2 more than second-place and host Western Oregon (126-1/2) in the nine-team field.

WWU placed third (137-1/2) in the women's competition. Seattle Pacific won its third straight title and for the fifth time in six years with 188 points, five more than Alaska Anchorage (183).

"Both teams scored more points than they were projected to, and winning the championship was very nice," said WWU coach Pee Wee Halsell (25th year). "We have a big group of seniors, so that makes it even more special."

Gruger and Hoffman each scored 24 points for the Vikings in the competition.

Hoffman became just the eighth male to win three straight GNAC titles in an event. He threw the hammer 202-1, breaking the meet record set in 2003. On Friday, Hoffman won the discus with a mark of 160-9.

Gruger had a winning time of 22.21 in the 200 and helped the 4x100 relay to victory with a 41.79 clocking. He placed second in the 100 (10.88) and Friday finished third in the long jump (22-11).

WWU's Alex Harrison (Sr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) broke his own school record in the men's javelin with a NCAA Division II automatic national qualifying mark of 214-7. He placed second to Alaska Anchorage's Cody Parker who broke Harrison's meet record set in 2010 with a throw of 215-0.

Harrison won his second GNAC decathlon 11 days ago in Ellensburg. His other triumph came in 2010.

In the women's division Saturday, the Vikings won four events.

Eleanor Siler (Sr., Spokane/Lewis & Clark) improved her provisional national qualifying time in taking the 400 in 55.73.

Michelle Howe (Sr., Lakewood) won the 400 hurdles in 1:03.06. She placed third in the 100 hurdles, bettering her PNQ time at 14.36. Howe won the 100 hurdles at the GNAC meet in 2010.

Lindsay Wells (So., Seattle/Nathan Hale) upped her PNQ mark with a school-record winning toss of 166-6 in the hammer and Brittany Grandy (Fr., Sedro-Woolley) reached the provisional standard in taking the long jump at 5-6 1/2.

On Friday, WWU's Karis Anderson (Jr., Seattle/Roosevelt) and Emily Warman (Sr., Sedro-Woolley) each set meet records with respective winning marks of 12-6 3/4 in the pole vault and 19-1 1/2 in the long jump.
