SPOKANE, Wash. - Katelyn Steen (Jr., Sammamish/Eastlake) placed 34th to earn All-America honors as the Western Washington University women bettered their national ranking by seven places, finishing 18th among 32 teams at the NCAA Division II National Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Plantes Ferry Sports Complex.

The Viking men were 20th, one place below their national ranking coming into the race. They were led by Chip Jackson (Shoreline/Shorewood), who was 61st.

"The women really came in and ran a solid race," said WWU coach Pee Wee Halsell (27th year). "Our top six runners all ran better than they had two weeks ago on this course at regionals."

"The men were a little disappointed that they didn't beat their ranking and didn't finish among the top 10. They went out hard and were in the right place at the start, but for some reason just didn't have it at the end. Things just didn't click for us today."

"But I am very proud of both squads and how they culminated the season." Making her second national appearance, Steen completed the six-kilometer course in 21:46.

"She ran a very solid race," Halsell said of Steen. "She may have been a little disappointed in not finishing higher, but this is the cream of the crop that she is competing against."

Taylor Guenther (So., Vancouver/Prairie) placed 94th (22:35) for WWU, followed by Haley O'Connor (Jr., Sammamish/Eastlake), 131st (22:53); Austen Reiter (So., Camas), 136th (22:57); Lillianna Stelling (Fr., Langley/South Whidbey), 144th (23:00); Sofia Marikis (Fr., Nine Mile Falls/Lakeside), 170th (23:20); and Haida Ikeda (Sr., Issaquah), 208th (24:00).

Jackson, who was running his third national race, had a time of 31:38 over the10-kilometer distance to lead the WWU men.

Cory Johnson (R-Fr., Enumclaw) placed 116th (32:31). He replaced the Vikings' No.2 runner Tanner Boyd (Camas), who was unable to compete because of a heel injury.

"Cory really came alive for us when everyone else seemed to be laboring," said Halsell.

Isaac Griffith (So., Spokane/Lewis & Clark) was 125th (32:36) for WWU, followed by Jonathan Quimby (Jr., Ferndale/Whatcom CC), 153rd (32:52); Tabor Reedy (Jr., Poulsbo/North Kitsap), 177th (33:13); Nathan Richards (Jr., Longview/R.A. Long/Clark CC), 194th (33:30), and Dylan Peterson (Seattle/Garfield), 204th (33:46).

The Viking women finished with 452 points, one behind No.17 Indiana PA. Grand Valley State placed first with 54, 37 better than runner-up Adams State. Three other Great Northwest Athletic Conference schools placing, besides WWU, were Alaska Anchorage fourth (214), Simon Fraser seventh (251) and Seattle Pacific 21st (492).

The individual women's champion was U-Mary's Jennifer Agnew in 20:51, with Pittsburg State's Jessica Macy second in 21:03.

The WWU men were 20th with 544 points, 11 behind 19th Missouri Southern. Adams State took the team title with 54 points, 50 better than second-place Grand Valley State. Alaska Anchorage was seventh (256).

The individual men's champion was Adams State's Tabor Stevens in 29:51, 11 seconds better than runner-up Vegard Olstad from Western State.
