LACEY, Wash. - Western Washington University scored five unearned runs in the third inning and hung on for a 7-6 win in the opener, then was blanked 8-0 in the nightcap that lasted just five innings because of the eight-run mercy rule as the Vikings split a doubleheader at Saint Martin's University in Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball action Saturday, March 23, at SMU Field.
WWU is 13-11 overall and 5-5 in GNAC play. Saint Martin's is 15-9 overall and 6-4 in league action.
Though managing just six hits in the first game, the Vikings took advantage of three Saint Martin's errors in their five-run third. Kaleigh Keating (Jr., Salinas, CA/Notre Dame Salinas) brought in two runs with a single and Jordan Walley (Fr., Maple Valley/Tahoma), who had two hits in the game, singled across another.
WWU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out double by Jackie Rothenberger (Sr., Coquitlam, B.C./Gleneagle Secondary).
Saint Martin's scored three runs in the bottom of the first and plated three more in the seventh with two runners in scoring position before Viking pitcher Alexie Levin (Fr., Everett) (4-3) got the final out on a fly to left. T he Saints had 14 hits in the loss, three each by Samantha Munger amd Aubree Pocklington. Dani Wall drove in three runs on a pair of singles.
In the second game, WWU was held to three singles by Saint Martin's pitcher Taylor Bakos (8-4), who walked three and struck out two.
The Saints' Lacey McGladrey hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first. She also had a run-scoring single in Saint Martin's two-run third. Munger, who was 3-for-3, and finished 6-for-7 in the two games.
Joslyn Eugenio and Taviah Jenkins each had two-run doubles as the Saints scored four times in the fourth.
WWU travels to Monmouth, Ore., where it will meet Western Oregon University in a GNAC twinbill Sunday, March 24 (1 p.m.).
