March 9, 2013

Box Score - Game 1

Box Score - Game 2

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University made the most of its four hits and pitcher Jenna DeRosier (Jr., Kelso) scattered eight as the Vikings defeated Central Washington University, 4-2, in the opener of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Saturday at Viking Field on the WWU campus.

The Wildcats salvaged a split with its first win of the season, 5-0, in the nightcap, as Heldy Wells tossed a four-hit shutout and Jill McDaniels hit a three-run homer.

WWU is 12-8 overall and 4-2 in conference play, and Central is 1-8 overall and 1-4 in league action.

In the first game, CWU pitcher Maria Gua gave up just four hits, but the Vikings were able to scratch out four runs.

Allie Crowe (So., Auburn/Jefferson) got the Vikings on the scoreboard first with a run-scoring double in the bottom of the second inning. That brought in Kaleigh Keating (Jr., Salinas, CA/Notre Dame Salinas), who had reached on an error with two out and stolen second.

In the fourth, WWU's Haylee Baker (Jr., Poulsbo/Bainbridge) drew a leadoff walk. Pinch runner Arianna Barrio (Fr., Stanwood/Lakewood) went to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third and scored on a double steal initiated by Keating, who had walked.

Central tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth on a two-run homer by Casi Ellis. That followed a bunt single by Michaela Hazlett, who had three hits in the game.

WWU came back with two runs in the bottom of that frame on three straight hits by Camille Depew (Sr., Seattle/Seattle Lutheran), Kristen Allen (Sr., Arlington) and Alexie Levin (Sr., Everett), whose single plated both Depew and Allen.

DeRosier got the complete-game victory, upping her record to 6-2. She walked three and got out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the third with one of her two strikeouts.

Gua walked four and struck out eight.

In the second game, Central scored four runs in the second, the homer by McDaniels down the left-field line being the big blow. The Wildcats also picked up an unearned run in the fourth.

Wells (1-1) walked two and struck out four.

Anisa Wingsness (Fr., North Bend/Mount Si) (3-4) went the distance in the circle for WWU, allowing seven hits.

Levin extended her hitting streak to 12 games, while Kristen Allen (Sr., Arlington) had her string snapped at 11.

WWU next travels to Simon Fraser University for a GNAC doubleheader Saturday, March 16 (1 p.m.) at Terry Fox Field on the SFU campus.
