ELLENSBURG, Wash. - With the bulk of its squad having competed a day earlier in southern California, Western Washington University placed third in the women's division and fourth in the men's division among five teams at the Central Washington University Spike Arlt Invitational on Saturday at Tomlinson Stadium.
Laura Barrow (So., South Whidbey/Langley), Mackenzie Smith (So., Vancouver/Prairie) and Shandel Yanney (Jr., Ferndale) each performed well in two events for the Vikings.
Barrow placed second in the women's 400-meter hurdles (1:06.56) and ran the leadoff leg on the WWU 4x400 relay (4:15.11) that also was finished second. Yanney was second in the women's long jump (15-3 1/4) and third in the triple jump (33-5 1/4), and Smith was third in both the women's shot put (39-6) and discus (133-1).
The Vikings' Cheyenna Pinley (So., Bellingham/Squalicum) was second in the women's pole vault at 11-5 3/4, with teammate Amy Rovira (So., Richland/Hanford) third at the same height.
WWU's Amanda Overdick (Sr., Lynnwood) and Katelyn Wright (Fr., Washougal) tied for second in the women's long jump (5-3), Emily Stralser (Jr., Cheney) was second in the women's 100 hurdles (15.74) and Margaret Roe (Jr., Bellevue/Newport) was second in the women's discus (134-3).
Also placing third for the Vikings were Damien Fisher (Sr., Fife) in the men's javelin (164-5) and Rachel Ivancic (Fr., Seattle/Nathan Hale) in the women's 100 (12.73).
On Friday at Azusa, Calif., five WWU athletes reached NCAA Division II provisional national qualifying standards, two others improved their PNQs and two school records and one conference mark were broken at the fifth annual Azusa Pacific University Bryan Clay Invitational.
The Viking quintet reaching provisional standards for the first time this season were Brett Watson (So., Ferndale), who tied for first in the men's high jump by clearing a Great Northwest Athletic Conference record 6-9 3/4; Kevin Yates (Fr., Snohomish), who placed third in the men's long jump with a leap of 23-6 3/4; Alex Donigian (So., Mission Viejo, CA/Trabucohils), who finished fifth in the men's 100 meters with a school record time of 10.57; Emily Warman (Sr., Sedro-Woolley), who was fourth in the women's triple jump with a mark of 39-3 3/4; and Haley O'Connor (So., Sammamish/Eastlake), who was eighth in the women's 3000 steeplechase with a 11:13.35 clocking.
Improving their PNQ marks were Tanya Bjornsson (Jr., Ferndale), who placed third in the women's long jump with a school-record 19-2 3/4; and Bethany Drake (Fr., Sandy, OR), who finished third in the women's javelin with a mark of 145-4.
Bjornsson also was fifth in the 100 hurdles (14.31) and sixth in the 4x400 relay (4:01.63), and Donigian helped the men's 4x100 relay to victory in 41.36.
WWU's 4x400 men's relay placed second (3:15.60).
