Box Score
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and won 5-2 in the nightcap of a doubleheader Saturday, Apr. 20, with league-leading and nationally No.21-ranked Saint Martin's University in Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball action at Viking Field on the WWU campus.
The Vikings, 20-20 overall and 9-9 in league play, lost the opener, 3-1, to Saint Martin's, 31-12 overall and 13-5 in GNAC action.
With the second game tied at 2-2, WWU's Camille Depew (Seattle/Seattle Lutheran) led off the sixth with a single and stole second as Rachelle Berry (Alger/Burlington-Edison) reached on catcher interference. They both advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Meghan Carrillo (Jr., Prunedale/North Monterey County).
Cheyenne Best (So., Big Lake/Sedro-Woolley) then hit a grounder to the shortstop who threw home and had Depew hung up. But the catcher's throw to third hit Depew and bounced away, allowing her to score, and the third baseman's errant throw to second allowed Berry to come home. Later, Kristen Allen (Arlington) doubled in Best.
WWU's Alexie Levin (Fr., Everett) (8-6) pitched 6-2/3 innings to earn the win with Anisa Wingsness (Fr., North Bend/Mount Si) getting a save.
Jordan Walley (Fr., Maple Valley/Tahoma) was 2-for-3 for the Vikings, driving in two runs with a first-inning single.
Saint Martin's Dani Wall, who was 5-for-5 on the afternoon, had a run-scoring single in the fourth as did Taviah Jenkins to tie the game.
In the first contest, Wall was 3-for-3 and drove in all three Saint Martin's runs, doubling in two in the first and singling in another in the second. Both of those hits came with two outs.
Saints' pitcher Sam Munger (16-6) limited WWU to three hits, all singles, not allowing a hit for the last 4-1/3 innings.
The Vikings scored their only run in the third on a two-out single by Walley. That scored Kaleigh Keating (Jr., Salinas, CA/Notre Dame Salinas), who led off with a single and stole second.
Jenna DeRosier (Jr., Kelso) (7-8) pitched the first six innings for WWU.
WWU will host Western Oregon on Sunday, Apr. 21 (12 noon). That will be Senior Day for the Vikings with five seniors being honored prior to the games. They are Allen, Melissa Becker (Puyallup/Graham-Kapowsin), Berry, Depew and Jackie Rothenberger (Coquitlam, B.C.).
