April 6, 2013

Box Score

TURLOCK, Calif, - Western Washington University lost both of its games Saturday at the Tournament of Champions, being blanked 2-0 by Cal State San Bernardino and falling 8-3 to nationally No.9-ranked Humboldt State.

The 18-18 Vikings, who won two of three games Friday, finished 2-3 in pool play and enter bracket action Sunday.

WWU had just five hits, all singles, against CSUSB pitcher Kacey Cota (1-3), who retired eight straight during one stretch and had one strikeout without a walk in the shutout.

Taylor Davis provided the only scoring with a two-run single in the top of the sixth inning for the Coyotes (12-18), who snapped a four-game losing streak.

WWU's Meghan Carrillo (Jr., Prunedale, CA/North Monterey County) and Alexie Levin (Fr., Everett) had back-to-back singles to begin the bottom of the seventh. But Cota induced a double play and ended the game with a ground out.

Viking third baseman Cheyenne Best (So., Big Lake/Sedro-Woolley) had nine assists in the contest.

Jenna DeRosier (Jr., Kelso) (6-7) took the loss in a complete-game effort.

WWU gave up 14 hits to Humboldt State (32-10), Julie Pena having a run-scoring double in the Lumberjacks' four-run third and a three-run homer in the fourth.

Jackie Rothenberger (Sr., Coquitlam, BC/Gleneagle Secondary) had three hits for the Vikings, and Jordan Walley (Fr., Maple Valley/Tahoma) and Kaleigh Keating (Jr., Salinas, CA/Notre Dame Salinas) two each.

HSU relief pitcher Hannah Williams did not allow a run and just three hits in 4-1/3 innings.
