BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University's Katelyn Steen (Sr., Sammamish/Eastlake) ran a personal-best course time to place third in the women's division as the Viking men finished fourth and the women eighth on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the 41st Annual WWU Cross Country Classic held at Lake Padden Park.
Alaska Anchorage had six runners in the top 10 in taking the men's title in the 14-team field with a near perfect score of 18. The Seawolves were followed by Victoria BC at 39.
Trinity Western BC won the women's crown with 58 points, 32 better than runner-up Simon Fraser in a field of 12 teams.
The UAA men entered the event ranked seventh nationally in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, and the Simon Fraser women were eighth. Both WWU squads were rated nationally, the women 23rd and the men 25th.
Steen completed the six-kilometer course in 21:20. She trailed just two TWU runners, Sarah Inglis winning for the second straight year with a course-record time of 20:52, followed by teammate Fiona Bensen in 21:17.
"I was focusing on running relaxed the first part of the race and then really working hard on the hills on the backside," said Steen, who ran 44 seconds faster than her previous best. "The biggest thing I was working on was having a fast last 800 meters. I'm always working on that."
Taylor Guenther (Jr., Vancouver/Prairie) was the Vikings' next finisher after Steen, crossing the line 23rd in 22:44.
"We were tired coming in from our training this week and it showed in the last half of the race," said WWU head coach Pee Wee Halsell (28th year).
UAA's Dylan Anthony led a 1-2-3 sweep in the men's 10-kilometer race with a winning time of 31:02. Henry Cheseto was second in 31:17 and Dominik Notz third in 31:20.
Leading the defending champion WWU men was Isaac Griffith (So., Spokane/Lewis & Clark), who placed 21st in 32:12. Nathan Richards (Sr., Longview/R.A. Long) was 25th (32:26), Jonathan Quimby (Sr., Ferndale) 32nd (32:39), Juan Castillo (Sr., Lake Stevens) 36th (32:50) and Sean Eustis (R-Fr., Washougal) 39th (32:57).
"I was pleased with how we competed, but we were strung out more than expected," Halsell said. "I saw some things we need to work on, but it's six weeks before regionals and that's what we're shooting for."
WWU takes a week off before hosting the WWU Invitational on Oct. 25 (10 a.m.) at Hovander Park in Ferndale.
