Interview with Seniors Kelsey Moore, Emily Cotter and Taylor Dillard
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Middle blocker Kayla Erickson (Sr., Gig Harbor/Peninsula) had match-highs of 19 kills on .417 hitting and four blocks, lifting Western Washington University over Western Oregon University, 25-10, 25-14, 25-19, on Senior Night in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.
Outside hitter Kelsey Moore (Sr., Bellevue/Newport) added 11 kills for the Vikings, rated No.14 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll, who improved to 19-6 overall and 12-4 in GNAC play.
WOU, which fell to 4-20 overall and 2-14 in conference action, got a match-high 25 digs from Christie Colasurdo.
WWU, which hit .312 to .050 for the Wolves, did not trail in dominating the first two sets.
There were 10 ties and four lead changes in the third set with WOU within one point, 19-18, before the Vikings ended it with a 6-1 run. The match-ending point came on a kill by Emily Cotter (Sr., University Place/Curtis).
WWU libero Samantha Hutchinson (Sr., University Place/Curtis), the NCAA II national leader in digs per set, had a team-high 16 digs and Jennica McPherson (Jr., Seattle/Kennedy) added 15 along with seven kills.
Rachel Roeder (Jr., Sammamish/Issaquah) had nine kills for the Vikings, and setter Taylor Dillard (Sr., Milton/Fife) contributed a match-high 41 assists.
Erickson had seven kills in the first set and six each in both the second and third games. Moore had six kills in the first game and five in the third.
The match, which took just 1:14 to complete, was the last at Carver Gym for five WWU seniors, all four-year letter winners. They were Cotter, Dillard, Erickson, Hutchinson and Moore.
WWU finished 9-1 at home this season.
WWU ends its regular-season next week with a trip to Alaska, meeting Alaska Fairbanks on Nov. 13, and Alaska Anchorage on Nov. 15 in GNAC counters.
