WWU splits with defending GNAC champion Saint Martin's

March 15, 2014

Box Score - Game 1

Box Score - Game 2

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University did not have a hit in generating the only run of the first game and gave up six unearned runs in the final inning of the second game as it split a doubleheader with defending champion Saint Martin's University, winning 1-0 and losing 7-3, in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action Saturday at Viking Field on the WWU campus.

The Vikings' Jenna DeRosier (Sr., Kelso) (5-2) scattered seven hits in pitching a shutout in the opener for the Vikings, now 11-6 overall and 3-3 in GNAC action. The loss was WWU's first at home in six games this season.

Saint Martin's is 9-9 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

WWU scored the lone run of the first game in the fourth inning. Autumn Isaacson (Jr., Lake Stevens) drew a leadoff walk and stole second and third bases before scoring on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Haylee Baker (Sr., Poulsbo/Bainbridge).

Prior to Isaacson's walk, Saint Martin's pitcher Sam Munger retired the first nine Vikings and both hits she allowed came in the seventh to Kaleigh Keating (Sr., Salinas, CA/Notre Dame Salinas) and Isaacson.

With the help of some standout defense, DeRosier did not give up a run despite having runners in scoring position for five of the seven innings. A backhand grab of a sharp ground ball just inside third base by Emma Blauser (So., Federal Way/Todd Beamer) ended a two-out, bases-loaded jam in the sixth, and Baker helped turn a double play to end the game.

Sam Munger was 3-for-3 for Saint Martin's and Lacey McGladrey had two hits.

WWU held a 3-1 lead in the second game before Saint Martin's erupted for six runs, all unearned, in the seventh. The Saints' Dani Wall had the big blow, a two-run double. Also driving in runs were Munger, Taviah Jenkins and Jackie Schmaeling, who was 3-for-4.

Munger (7-5) got the win despite giving up 14 hits to the Vikings, who left 10 runners on base.

WWU's Kali Patterson (Fr., Bonney Lake) was 3-for-3. Having two hits each were Alexie Levin (So., Everett), Lynsey Amundson (Fr., Arlington) and Meghan Carrillo (Sr., Prunedale, CA/North Monterey County).

The Vikings scored two runs in the third, Levin driving in one with a single and Amundson another on a sacrifice fly. Lauren Bennett (So., Tustin, CA/Beckman) gave WWU a 3-1 lead with a run-scoring single in the third after the Saints had plated a run on a bases-loaded walk in the top of that frame.

Isaacson, a transfer from Bellevue CC, has reached base in all 17 games this season. WWU next plays host to Western Oregon in a GNAC twinbill Sunday (12 noon).
