FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The No. 16 Western Washington University volleyball team won their 16th consecutive match with a 3-game sweep of the University of Alaska Saturday afternoon in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match.
The Vikings (16-2, 10-0 GNAC) defeated the Nanooks 25-19, 25-23, 25-20 to remain perfect in GNAC play. The 16-match winning streak remains 5th-longest in program history (record is 24 straight in 2003).
"Anytime you come away from this road trip with two wins, it is a good thing," said head coach Diane Flick. "But we have a lot of work to do and are looking forward to the second half of the season."
Senior outside hitter Rachel Roeder (Sammamish, WA/Issaquah) led the Vikings with 13 kills on a .435 hitting percentage. Redshirt freshman Abby Phelps (Manson, WA/Chelan) added 8 kills and 7 digs for 9 total points.
"Abby did a lot of the little things today that don't show up in the stats and she was a key to our win today," said Flick. "Her defense, serves...she was just really steady and made the right reactions. She had two really good matches for us on this trip. Rachel Roeder was very efficient on the outside and had a nice match as well."
Sophomore Joellee Buckner (Colville, WA) anchored the defense with 10 digs and 4 block assists, and Brette Boesel (RS Fr., Brewster, WA) recorded a team-high 18 assists. Middle blocker Kayleigh Harper (RS Fr., Oak Harbor, WA) contributed another steady performance with 9 kills and 4 blocks.
The Vikings return to action next week with a pair of home GNAC matches vs. Northwest Nazarene (Thursday, 7 pm, Squalicum High School) and Central Washington (Saturday, 7 pm, Whatcom Community College).
