MONMOUTH, Ore. - Outside hitter Rachel Roeder recorded a match high 16 kills and middle block Kayleigh Harper added 14 kills on a .591 hitting percentage to lead the No. 16 Western Washington Vikings to a four-set road win (25-10, 25-13, 24-26, 25-15) over Western Oregon Thursday evening in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match.
The Vikings (19-4 overall, 13-2 GNAC) remain tied for first place in the GNAC standings with Alaska Anchorage, who beat Central Washington in 5 sets tonight. Northwest Nazarene was also tied for 1st place heading into today's action, but dropped a 5-set match at Alaska Fairbanks. WOU falls to 7-17 overall and 4-11 in GNAC play.
"We did some really nice things on offense tonight, getting out hitters involved and having a balanced attack," said head coach Diane Flick. "We also played some good defense to set up our offense which is a key for us."
Roeder (Sr., Sammamish, WA/Issaquah) re-emerged as an offensive threat after not posting double-digits in kills in three of her last four matches. Roeder recorded her 16 kills on 41 attacks, netting a .366 hitting percentage.
"Rachel is our go-to hitter on offense and she stepped up tonight," said Flick. "She really gave us a spark when we needed it tonight."
Harper (RS Fr., Oak Harbor, WA) continued her impressive play in the middle notching 14 kills on 22 attacks (.591) and added 3 blocks. Over her last four matches Harper is averaging 3.13 kills/set with a combined .544 hitting percentage.
Opposite Joellee Buckner (So., Colville, WA) recorded 13 kills and 17 digs for her sixth double-double of the season and Abby Phelps (RS Fr., Manson, WA/Chelan) had 9 kills and a team-high 21 digs.
