No. 16 Volleyball Sweeps Concordia

PORTLAND, Ore. - Redshirt freshman outside hitter Abby Phelps recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs, and senior outside hitter Rachel Roeder tallied 11 kills on a .400 hitting percentage to lead the No. 16 Western Washington Vikings to a sweep (25-12, 25-18, 25-14) over Concordia (OR) in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Saturday evening.

With their fourth consecutive victory, the Vikings improved to 20-4 overall and remain atop the GNAC standings with a 14-2 mark in conference play. Concordia drops to 15-9 overall and 7-9 in GNAC play. The Vikings entered today tied for the GNAC lead with Alaska Anchorage, who is playing Northwest Nazarene tonight in Anchorage [ Live Stats].

"We came out and took care of business," said head coach Diane Flick. "Our serving was really consistent throughout the match and took Concordia out of their game. I think that was the key for us tonight."

Phelps (RS Fr., Manson, WA/Chelan) recorded her sixth double-double of the season, adding 15 digs and 4 blocks (3 block assists, 1 solo block) to her 10 kills for 12.5 points.

"Abby does a nice job both on offense and defense," added Flick. "Her personality brings a fiery attitude on defense and our team picks up on it."

Roeder (Sammamish, WA/Issaquah) put an exclamation point on her solid weekend with a match-high 11 kills. The senior hit .400, making only one attack error in 25 swings. Roeder averaged 3.86 kills/set in the victories over Western Oregon (3-1) and Concordia (3-0).

Redshirt freshman Kayleigh Harper (Oak Harbor, WA) tallied a team-high 13.5 points, recording 8 kills and 8 total blocks (3 block solo, 5 block assists).

Opposite Joellee Buckner (So., Colville, WA) and outside hitter Arielle Turner (So., Leavenworth, WA/Cascade) each recorded 3 service aces, as the Vikings had 7 service aces (T-4th most in a match this season).

Up Next: The Vikings return home for a pair of crucial matches next week hosting Alaska Fairbanks (Thursday, 7 pm) and nationally ranked Alaska Anchorage (Saturday, 7 pm). Both matches will be held at Whatcom Pavilion.
