WAIPIO, Hawaii - Mckinlee Sellevold (Fr., Everett/Cascade) pitched a one-hit shutout and catcher Mackenzie Hughes (So., Ellensburg) drove in two runs with a pair of two-out singles as Western Washington University bounced back for a 3-0 win in the nightcap of a softball doubleheader with Chaminade University on Saturday, Feb. 7, at CORP field.
WWU, making its season debut, lost the opener 7-2. Chaminade is now 1-3.
Chaminade's only hit off Sellevold, who walked one and struck out four, was a one-out single in the first inning by Ashley Phelps. Sellevold then retired 14 straight batters before walking Sierra Mendiola with one out in the sixth.
Hughes scored Emily Benson (Fr., West Richland/Kamiakin) in the second and plated Alexie Levin (Jr., Everett) in the sixth. The Vikings' other run came in the seventh on a two-out single by Levin that scored Alicia Fine (Sr., Mount Vernon), a transfer from NCAA Division I Portland State.
WWU had nine hits in the game, two each by Hughes and Benson.
The Vikings held a 2-0 lead in the opener after a run-scoring single by Jordan Walley (Jr., Maple Valley/Tahoma), but Chaminade came back with a run in the bottom of that frame, then scored two in the fifth and four more in the sixth,
The Silverswords' Jenn Betian was 3-for-4, driving in three runs and scoring one, and Aja Keyes was 4-for-4, scoring two runs and driving in one. Betain had a two-run homer in the sixth.
Brett Aspel (1-1) pitched a complete-game victory for Chaminade. She allowed eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
WWU got two hits each from Sellevold, one a double, and Kali Patterson (So., Bonney Lake), one a triple.
The Vikings meet BYU-Hawaii on Monday, Feb. 9 (1 p.m.) and Hawaii Pacific on Tuesday, Feb. 10 (1 p.m.) to close out their road trip.
