BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University scored an unearned run in the 11th inning to win the opener, 5-4, and the nightcap was halted after four innings because of darkness with the Vikings trailing 11-3 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball action Wednesday, March 4, at Viking Field on the WWU campus.
The Vikings improved to 9-6 overall and 2-1 in GNAC play, and MSUB fell to 7-10 overall and 1-2 in GNAC action.
In the first game, WWU scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 4-2 lead. Alexie Levin (Jr., Everett) drove in two with a single and scored on a home run over the left centerfield fence by Emily Benson (Fr., West Richland/Kamiakin), her third of the season.
MSUB tied the contest at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run homer by Emily Osborn, her sixth of the year.
WWU pitcher Makinlee Sellevold (Fr., Everett/Cascade), who also gave up two runs in the third, went the distance in upping her record to 6-1. She was able to work out of a number of jams as MSUB left 16 runners on base and outhit the Vikings, 12 to 4.
In the bottom of the 11th, Cylie Richards (Fr., Kennewick/Kamiakin) pinch ran for the Vikings and was placed on second base via the tiebreaker rule. She was sacrificed to third, and scored on an error on a fielder's choice by Arianna Barrio (Jr., Stanwood/Lakewood).
The 11 innings matched WWU's longest game, done four times previously, since a school-record 13-inning contest in 2001.
MSUB broke the second contest open by scoring 10 runs on 10 hits in the fourth inning before the game was stopped. It will be completed on Thursday, March 5, at 3 p.m.
