BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Pitcher Makinlee Sellevold (Fr., Everett/Cascade) extended her victory string to six with two winning performances, notching her second shutout of the season and hitting her first collegiate home run in the second game, as Western Washington University swept Central Washington University, 7-1 and 5-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Sunday, March 8, at Viking Field on the WWU campus.
WWU improved to 11-7 overall and 4-2 in conference action, while Central fell to 8-7 overall and 2-2 in GNAC play.
Sellevold, 8-1, pitched 13 innings in the two contests, scattering 12 hits, none for extra bases, striking out six and issuing no walks.
In the opener, Sellevold worked the first six innings. During one stretch, she retired 11 straight Wildcat batters.
The trio of first baseman Emily Benson (Fr., West Richland/Hanford), shortstop Alicia Fine (Sr., Mount Vernon) and outfielder Alexie Levin (Jr., Everett) had seven of the Vikings' 10 hits, and drove in six and scored five of their seven runs.
Fine hit a two-out double in the bottom of the first and scored on a single by Levin. Back-to-back doubles by Fine and Levin accounted for one run in the third, and designated hitter Jordan Walley (Jr., Maple Valley/ Tahoma) brought in Levin with a bloop single.
WWU scored four more runs in the fourth as Fine had a run-scoring single and Benson a base-loaded double into the right field corner.
Fine was 3-for-4, scoring three runs and driving in one; Levin 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, and Benson 2-for-3 with three RBI.
In the nightcap, Sellevold did not allow a runner past second and retired the first seven Central batters in going the distance. In the second, her homer over the left field fence came with two outs and broke a scoreless tie.
Sellevold also had a single in the sixth when the Vikings scored four unearned runs.
The first came when catcher Mackenzie Hughes (So., Ellensburg) walked with the bases loaded. Third baseman Emma Blauser (Jr., Federal Way/Todd Beamer) scored another on a fielder's choice and second baseman Kali Patterson (So., Bonney Lake) drove in two more with a double.
WWU is on the road next week, traveling to Saint Martin's on Saturday, March 14 (1 p.m.), and Western Oregon on Sunday, March 15 (12noon), for GNAC doubleheaders.
