BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Freshman Makinlee Sellevold (Everett/Cascade) pitched two complete-game victories and got the decisive hit, a three-run homer in the sixth, in the opener, and Alexie Levin (Jr., Everett) drove in all four runs in the nightcap as Western Washington University swept league-leading Saint Martin's University, 5-4 and 4-1, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Sunday, Apr. 12, at Viking Field on the WWU campus.
WWU, 24-16 overall, moved into a tie for second place in the GNAC standings at 13-7. SMU fell to 32-16 overall and remained first in league play at 12-4.
Sellevold, who improved to 19-7, allowed just two hits in the second game.
In the first contest, SMU took a 4-1 lead with four runs in the bottom of the fourth.
The Vikings got one back in the fifth on a run-scoring double by Kali Patterson (So., Bonney Lake) and went ahead for good in the sixth on a two-out, three-run blast by Sellevold, her third of the season.
Alicia Fine (Sr., Mount Vernon) had gotten WWU off to an early 1-0 lead with a two-out homer in the first, her fifth of the year.
In the second game, Levin put the Vikings ahead 1-0 with a leadoff home run in the second. But SMU's Megan Miller tied the score at 1-1 with a homer in the fifth. That was the Saints' first hit in the contest off Sellevold, who faced just 25 batters, four over the minimum.
Levin broke the contest open with a two-out, bases-loaded double in the fourth. Sellevold began the inning with a double.
The home run by Levin tied her for the team lead with six this season. It was the 18th of her three-year career, four away from the school record.
Levin and Sellevold each had four hits in the two games to lead WWU.
The Vikings have a week off from competition before traveling to Central Washington for a doubleheader on Apr. 24 (1 p.m.).
