BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Three Western Washington University seniors making their final home appearances all had standout performances as the Vikings swept Simon Fraser University, 10-0 in five innings and 5-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 25, at Viking Field on the WWU campus.
WWU, which has won six straight games and 10 of its last 11, improved to 28-16 overall and is second in the GNAC standings at 17-7. Simon Fraser fell to 17-28 overall and 5-17 in GNAC play.
In the first game, seniors Allie Crowe (Auburn/Thomas Jefferson), Alicia Fine (Mount Vernon) and Autumn Isaacson (Lake Stevens) combined for six hits, eight runs and six runs batted in.
Fine was 3-for-3, driving in four runs with a double, her team-leading 14th of the year, and a home run, her sixth of the season, tied for best on the squad. Isaacson scored three runs and drove in one. She had a single in her only official at bat and walked twice. Crowe was 2-for-3, scoring two runs and driving in one.
Makinlee Sellevold (Fr., Everett/Cascade) and Shayna Adelstein (So., Tucson, Ari./Marana Mountain View) combined for a one-hit shutout, that a single by SFU's Taylor Gillis to lead off the fourth inning. Sellevold, who had retired nine straight to that point, was replaced by Adelstein after the hit.
The Vikings scored one run in the first, four in the second with Fine's two-run homer the big blow and five in the third, the big hit a two-run triple by Arianna Barrio (Jr., Stanwood/Lakewood).
In the second game, Isaacson and Crowe were each 2-for-3. Isaacson, who had five stolen bases on the day, scored two runs and Crowe one. Fine had a hit and walked.
Sellevold gave up just a hit and a walk in four innings of work, combining with Holly Hawkins (Jr., Sedro-Woolley) and Aspen Ison (So., Gig Harbor/Peninsula) for a three-hit shutout. Hawkins pitched two innings and Ison one.
Isaacson got things started in the first when she singled, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. She scored on a single by Kali Patterson (So., Bonney Lake), who also drove in a run in the second with a sacrifice fly.
Jordan Walley (Jr., Maple Valley/Tahoma) made it 4-0 with a two-run homer in the third, her fifth of the year, and Alexi Levin (Sr., Everett) drove in a run in the fourth.
Barrio, playing centerfield, made the fielding play of the day in the fourth inning. With a SFU runner on second, she raced back to make a diving catch of a fly at the base of the fence, then got up and hit the relay person who threw out the runner trying for third.
Sellevold got both decisions for the Vikings as she improved to 23-7 and lowered her earned run average to 2.32.
Fine, Crowe and Barrio each finished with four hits in the two games.
WWU next competes in the GNAC Tournament on Apr. 30-May 2 at Yakima.
