HAYWARD, Calif. - Midfielder Greyden Saunders (Fr., Snohomish/Glacier Peak) scored in the fourth minute of the second overtime period, giving Western Washington University a 1-0 victory over Cal State East Bay in a non-conference men's soccer contest Thursday, Sept. 9.
WWU improved to 2-0-1 and CSUEB fell to 1-2-0.
After a series of passes worked the ball down the left side, Conner Pichette (Jr., Tacoma/Wilson) switched play to find Saunders on the right, and Saunders fired a shot from the top corner of the penalty area that went off the hands of the CSUEB goalkeeper and into the net.
"It was a pretty even game," said WWU coach Greg Brisbon. "East Bay was very organized and outworked us in the first 15 minutes of the game. But we kept grinding and created some good chances. It's a win on the road, we'll take it."
The Pioneers had an 18-8 advantage in shots, but WWU goalkeeper Tyler Visten (Jr., Mount Vernon) made four saves in earning his second consecutive shutout.
"Visten was amazing today," Brisbon said. "We had a lot of good performances, but he was our best player."
WWU, which is undefeated in its opening three games for the first time since 2000, faces a fourth consecutive West Region non-conference opponent on Saturday, visiting Notre Dame de Namur (2 p.m.)
