SEATTLE, Wash. - Senior Travis Milbrandt placed 5th in the 60-meter hurdles and sophomore Bryan Lee was also 5th in the weight throw to lead Western Washington University to a solid showing in the season-opening UW Indoor Preview Saturday at the Dempsey Indoor Center.

Milbrandt (Longview, WA/Mark Morris) clocked an NCAA II provisional mark of 8.17 in the prelims and placed 5th with an 8.28 mark in the finals. His prelim time is unofficially the 10th-fastest in Division II this season. In the finals he trailed only Pac-12 racers Chris Williams (UW/7.92), Marquis Morris (USC, 8.09) and CJ Allen (WSU, 8.16). Professional racer Siddhanath Thingalaya (Evo Track Club) finished first in 7.86. Milbrandt set the WWU Indoor 60m record at last year's GNAC Championships in Nampa, Idaho at 8.08.

"Travis had a phenomenal race and really competed well against some top runners," said WWU head coach Pee Wee Halsell. "He is well on his way to what we think will be a great senior season."

The men's 4x400 relay team consisting of Jade Wilson (Jr., Deer Park, WA), Ryan McArthur (Jr., Lynnwood, WA), Reid Lovercamp (Fr., Wenatchee, WA) and Daniel Jones (Fr., Ferndale, WA) placed 3rd in 3:22.62, 5th-fastest in school history.

Lee (Sammamish, WA/Skyline) placed 5th in the 35-pound weight throw with a 53-05.00 mark on his second throw. The throw moved Lee up to No. 2 in the WWU Indoor record books, trailing only Michael Hoffman's 57-2 throw in 2011.

Senior Mark Seely (Spokane, WA/Central Valley) placed 6th in the triple jump with an NCAA II provisional mark of 46-10.25 in his final attempt to record the 2nd-best jump in the WWU Indoor record books.

Sophomore Isaac Derline (Kent, WA/Kentridge) was 18th in the 3,000-meter clocking a personal-best 8:27.34, 3rd-best in WWU indoor history and a little more than a second off the NCAA II provisional qualifying time of 8:26.27.

Also earning top 10 finishes on the men's side were junior Ryan McArthur (Lynnwood, WA) in the 400-meter (10th, 49.64, 4th-best in WWU history), senior Nate van Tuinen (Yakima, WA/Riverside Christian/Spokane CC) in the long jump (7th, 22-10.00) and sophomore Rudy Mataya (Burlington, WA/Burlington-Edison) in the long jump (10th, 22-00.25).

On the women's side, senior Katelyn Wright (Washougal, WA) and junior Miranda Osadchey (Dupont, WA/Steilacoom) placed 9th and 10th respectively in the high jump both registering marks of 1.60m (5 feet, 3 inches). Osadchey recorded a personal best improving on her 1.59m mark set last season, remaining as the 5th-best mark in the WWU indoor record books.

Senior Taylor Guenther (Vancouver, WA/Prairie) placed 33rd in the 3,000-meter with a personal-best 10:14.80, the 4th-best time in indoor school history. Junior Jasmine McMullin (Sequim, WA) placed 24th in the long jump with a personal-best 17-00.50, 6th-best in program indoor history.

"Overall it was a good day with some really good performances by our team," added Halsell. "This gave us a chance to put all of our training to work in a meet with a lot of talented athletes, and showed us where we need to improve. We are excited to get back at it and come back to Seattle in a few weeks."

Western returns to action in the two-day UW Indoor Invitational Jan. 29-30 at the Dempsey Center.
