Nov. 21, 2016 BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Bruce Randall, who was twice a Western Washington University Athlete of the Year in the mid-1950s and a member of the school's Athletics Hall of Fame, passed away at 84 on Nov. 10, 2016, in Mesa, Arizona.
A graduate of Sequim (Wash.) High School, Randall was a three-sport athlete at WWU, receiving all-Evergreen Conference honors in football (defensive back/outside linebacker/quarterback), basketball (guard) and baseball (outfielder). He was the school's Athlete of the Year in 1955 and 1957, the Vikings' only two-time winner of that award until 1990.
Randall, who was a three-year letter winner in all three sports, was inducted into the WWU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1976.
After receiving his bachelor's degree in education from Western in 1957, Randall went on to coach and teach at Sequim, Ferndale and Sehome (Bellingham) high schools. He obtained a master's degree at WWU in 1968.
Randall's 1963 Ferndale High football team finished 9-1, upsetting Bellingham in the season finale after the game was delayed a week because of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
Randall later received a degree in administration from Washington State University and performed those duties at the Bellingham, East Wenatchee and Tumwater school districts.
Randall is survived by his wife Kay, who celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Sept. 5; daughters Kathy (Paul Fackrell), Kris (Mike Petersen), Jan (Dave Crollard) and son Mike. Additionally, Randall had five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Randall was a Navy veteran, serving from 1950-54. He also was a player/coach for the Bellingham Bells semi-pro baseball team in the 1960s.
A celebration of life will be held in Mesa, Arizona, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
