ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Abby Phelps, Kayleigh Harper and Arielle Turner each recorded 13 kills to lead the No. 15 Western Washington Vikings to a three-game sweep over rival Central Washington Saturday evening in Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball action at Nicholson Pavilion.
Game scores were 25-19, 25-22, 25-20 as the Vikings finished off the season sweep (won all 6 games vs. CWU) of the Wildcats. WWU bounced back from a five-game loss against Northwest Nazarene on Thursday to improve to 17-7 overall and remain in second place in the GNAC at 13-3. Central falls to 14-10 overall and 10-6 in league play.
"This was a really nice bounce-back win. We came prepared and the team was ready to play when they got off the plane from Nampa," said head coach Diane Flick-Williams. "We got better with one day of practice and applied it today."
Phelps (Manson, WA/Chelan), Turner (Leavenworth, WA/Cascade) and Harper (Oak Harbor, WA) led the Vikings offense that combined to hit .287 for the match with 53 kills. Phelps added a match-high 17 digs for her 14th double-double of the season.
"Our offense was pretty balanced, but Abby, Arielle and Kayleigh really carried us today," added Flick-Williams.
Sophomore setter Brette Boesel (Brewster, WA) engineered the offense with 29 assists.
The Wildcats did not have a player reach double-digits in kills, led by 8 kills each from Shelby Mauritson and Kiah Jones.
The Vikings return home for the final four matches of the regular season, hosting Seattle Pacific (Thursday, 7 pm) and Saint Martin's (Saturday, 7 pm) at Whatcom Pavilion.
"It will be nice to be home, but we have the goal to get better every day, and that doesn't stop at home or on the road," said Flick-Williams.
