ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Western Washington Vikings went 1-1 during the opening day of the Dixie State Softball Tournament, beating Hawai'i Hilo 3-1 and falling to California Baptist 6-0.
The Vikings (4-3) received a dominating pitching performance from freshman Shearyna Labasan (Mililani, HI/Maryknoll) registering 9 strikeouts in a complete-game victory over Hawai'i Hilo. Sophomore first baseman Emily Benson (West Richland, WA/Kamiakin) provided the big blow at the plate with a 2-run home run.
In the second game of the day, WWU couldn't overcome a 4-run first inning by Cal Baptist, allowing all 6 runs in the first two innings in a 6-0 setback. The Vikings scattered 7 hits in the game, but went 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position while being shutout for the first time this season.
The Vikings will play three more games in Utah this weekend, facing the tournament host and preseason No. 2 Dixie State (3 pm MT/2 pm PT) and Cal Baptist (5:30 pm MT/4:30 pm PT) tomorrow, and Hawai'i Hilo Sunday (12:30 pm MT/11:30 am PT).

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Freshman starting pitcher Shearyna Labasan recorded 9 strikeouts in a complete-game effort and sophomore first baseman Emily Benson hit a go-ahead 2-run home run to lift the Vikings to a 3-1 victory over Hawai'i Hilo Friday morning at the Dixie State Softball Tournament.
WWU trailed 1-0 through four innings, before tallying all three runs in the top of the 5th inning. Kali Patterson (Jr., Bonney Lake, WA) led off the inning with a walk and scored the tying run on a triple to right field by Alexie Levin (Everett, WA). Benson followed with a home run to center field for her team-leading third longball of the young season.
Levin led the Vikings going 2-for-4 with a triple, continuing her solid start to the season batting .556 (10-for-18) with 5 extra base hits (2B-3, 3B-2) and 8 RBI (through the first 6 games). Benson's 3 home runs give her 10 in her career, already 8th-most in WWU history.
Labasan (3-1) recorded her first career complete game victory in just her second collegiate start. Her 9 strikeouts are the most by a Vikings pitcher since Erika Quint recorded a school-record 16 strikeouts March 13, 2011 vs. Western Oregon.

California Baptist scored all six of its runs in the first two innings, including a 4-run first inning, to defeat the Vikings 6-0 Friday afternoon on Canyons Field #4.
The Lancers (7-1) wasted little time getting to Vikings starter Shayna Adelstein (Jr., Tucson, AZ/Marana Mountain View) with five of the first seven batters recording hits. Ali Subia hit a two-out, two-run double to left-center field to give the CBU the early 4-0 lead. Behind reliever Makinlee Sellevold (Everett, WA/Cascade) the Lancers scored only two runs the rest of the way, but Western couldn't push a run across off freshman starter Ashley Coleman, who registered the complete-game victory with 5 strikeouts.
Senior designated hitter Jordan Walley (Maple Valley, WA/Tahoma) led WWU at the plate going 2-for-3.
