Vikings Split Doubleheader at Simon Fraser

BURNABY, B.C. - The Western Washington University softball team split a doubleheader against Simon Fraser on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Beedie Field. WWU won the first game 7-3, but ran out of steam dropping the second game 7-1. WWU swept a doubleheader vs. the Clan Saturday in Bellingham to open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play for both teams.

The Vikings are 8-6 overall and opened GNAC play with a 3-1 record. The loss in the second game snapped a 12-game winning streak vs. Simon Fraser.

Western continues conference play next weekend hosting Northwest Nazarene in a pair of doubleheaders Friday (1 & 3 pm) and Saturday (12 & 2 pm) at Viking Field.

Sophomore first baseman Emily Benson hit a three-run home run immediately following a 45-minute rain delay to lead the Vikings to a 7-3 victory over Simon Fraser in the first game of the doubleheader.

Sophomore starting pitcher Makinlee Sellevold (Everett, WA/Cascade) earned the win to improve to 3-2 on the season and also went 1-for-3 with an RBI at the plate. She allowed 5 hits and 2 runs in 5.0 innings.

WWU scored 3 runs in the 1st inning, with Arianna Barrio (Sr., Stanwood, WA/Lakewood), Kali Patterson (Jr., Bonney Lake, WA) and Alexie Levin (Sr., Everett, WA) each recording singles to lead off the game. Levin and Lynsey Amundson (Jr., Arlington, WA) each recorded run-scoring singles, with another run scoring on an outfield error.

With the Vikings leading 4-2 following the lengthy rain delay, Benson (So., West Richland, WA/Kamiakin) blasted her team-leading 5th home run of the season to cushion the lead to 7-2. The home run was also the 12th of her career, tying for 5th in the WWU record books.

Benson and Levin each extended their hitting streaks to 6 consecutive games. Amundson went 2-for-4.

First baseman Taylor Lundrigan (2-for-4) and outfielder Rachel Proctor (2-for-3) each recorded multi-hit games for SFU. Starting pitcher Jessica Goulet (0-3) suffered the loss allowing 6 hits and 4 runs (3 ER) in 2.0 innings.

The Vikings had their three-game winning streak snapped in a 7-1 loss in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader at Beedie Field.

Western jumped out to the early lead in the 1st inning on a run-scoring single by Lynsey Amundson.

SFU took the lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning on a two-run double by Taylor Gillies. SFU added one more run in the 3rd, 3 runs in the 4th and a single tally in the 5th inning to cap the scoring. First baseman Nicole Ratel provided the big hit with a 2-run home run in the 3-run 4th inning.

The Vikings left the bases loaded in the 1st and 4th innings, and ended up 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Freshman starting pitcher Shearyna Labasan (Mililani, HI/Maryknoll) recorded the loss to fall to 5-2 on the season. She allowed 7 hits and 6 runs in 3.2 innings.

Junior second baseman Kali Patterson recorded three of the Vikings six hits, going 3-for-4 with a double. Emily Benson extended her hitting streak to a career-high 7 consecutive games going 1-for-3.

Amundson went 1-for-4 and ended the weekend series batting .500 (7-for-14).
